Hi, i think i'm due for a tune-up it's been decades, and i just started to feel skip/miss in sound of the motor under load of normal driving. Seems to start and idle fine.
I will check plugs, wires, cap, rotor, condensor, and throw a timing light on it, before i fire the parts cannon. :-)
Just looking to here were folks are getting parts from and any brands to stay away from is all, appreciate it !
This is what i found today.Tune-up from JEGS
NAPA Echlin branded stuff is great. No way would I buy that speed store stuff except maybe a cut to length, 7mm spiral core wire set. 7mm will fit your wire looms while 8mm would be a tight fit, if at all. You pays your money, you takes your pick.
Skip the hotrod stuff.
I had the same symptoms as you and went with NAPA echlin distributor parts. On plugs, get a hotter range than specified. AC45 heat range instead of 44. Go with 7mm wires to save you the agrivation of trying to thread garden-hose size wire through your engine.
Plan on it taking at least three times longer than you think it will to get the job done…but you’ll be happy with the change.
NGK Iridium spark plugs...good for 100K miles. AC/Delco products are all foreign made in a GM box--I wouldn't buy them. Echlin ignition parts are better. Nothing from the Zone.
Beware some of the AC Delco Gold is not really gold at all. I ordered front brake hoses from Rock that were AC Delco Gold, the hoses were marked Sunsong. I could have bought that brand at half price. Both the AC Delco and Sunsong were hearted on the Rock site. This has happened for me with other AC Delco Gold parts. Not USA made and just a generic part.
Hi, little update i warmed up car and felt pass side exhaust was weak with the choke on. So i pulled all the plugs on that side.
#4 and #6 seem to be clogged with oil.
I put them back in and swapped them around to see if the oil fouled ones follow the plugs or not.
If they do i think i can blame the plugs and order a new set.
I checked both ends of the wires and no corrosion i could see, and the dizzy looked practically brand new.
Next plan after i recheck plugs, is throw on the vacuum gauge and see if i can rule out valve train and piston issues.

You're feeling and comparing the exhaust puffs from the side pipes with your hands? GM put a passenger-side "heat riser" valve where the exhaust pipe connects to the manifold. The valve's flapper will cause that side to have a weaker puff than the driver's side. If your flapper has been cut out or a spacer substituted for the valve, there shouldn't be much difference between sides.
I see they are Accel plugs -- do you know the heat range?
Hi, no i have not finished my work figuring out the problem. If you can please post a link to the tune-up kit. i did not see it in the sticky's of this section.
Cheers !
