bought a new battery from Costco. It has side mount posts which makes it difficult, given the limited space in the battery box. My question is, were original battery configs utilizing top or side posts, and who has info where to get top mounted post batteries of the correct group number ?
thanks in advance.
Costco sells Interstate. You can get group numbers from Interstate online. I think Costco does not have info that far back. I just bought one from them side post in the larger optional group 78. This is the bigger optional battery size for a 1980.
look for the newest date code on the shelf.
The last Interstate battery I bought was at COSTCO ans it came with dual terminals and a great price. Top and side connections for both polarities. I do like this configuration even though my 1968 C3 came with a Top Post battery. Having dual posts allows me to have my EFI system on it own clean connection directly on the battery.
Securing the battery in your car is a great safety trick. You really don't want a charged battery flying around inside the vehicle or shorting itself out. Having a securely mounted battery is a very good thing so I install the battery and then connect it up afterwards!
Before EVER using any "New" battery be sure to fully charge it up to ensure it is ready for action. Many "new" batteries have sat for months before being purchased. I like looking for the freshest battery by checking the date codes on the stamps on the battery's exterior.
Marine Grade Circuit breakers are water resistant and available in several amperage and voltage ratings. I use them in my Convertible just to be safe.
Ok, no problems with the new batt. I do have a question,… i know where the smaller wire on the positive cable goes, but this car has a smaller wire on the neg cable as well. (it was not hooked up to anything when i got the car, but it does have a butt connector on the end, like it was at one time)
any thoughts on this??

Just for reference, Corvettes and every other GM car line switched from top post to side post batteries around August/September 1969. Sometime in the 2000's they went back to top posts.
