I've had a Steeroids rack and pinion kit on my '79 for over 10 years. Yesterday I blew up the rack. I can get a replacement from Steeroids but the cost with shipping would take a bigger chunk out of my retirement budget than I would like. I know they use an 'off-the-shelf' rack in their kits. If I can figure out what rack they are using I can probably source one locally at a more reasonable price. Does anyone know what the original application for that rack is?
I have some vague memory of it being a 90's Pontiac Grand Am rack???
Thanks. That is exactly what I had come up with based on appearance alone. If my local parts store had one in stock, it would be easy to verify. Now I have to decide if I'm certain enough to justify ordering one.
I would strongly suggest that you make a call to TURN ONE Steering and have them help you. I have a 1988 C4 with a power rack and pinion and the guys at Turn One are the best at renewing the older racks on the C4's. they are reasonable and very experienced. You can ship your rack to them and they will make it new again!
I have the Steeroids on my C3 and it has been there about as long as yours. How did the rack act when it stopped working? Any issues with the system since you had it? I have it on a 1968 BB C3 and I love the rack and pinion system.
STOCK C3 vettes do not have a steering RACK in there....they have a typical pinion box consisting of a worm drive direct from the steering wheel, to the gear set that changes it to a gear set output driven vertically that controls the rods to the wheel sets.....

I ordered up a replacement rack for a 1990 Pontiac Grand Am from Rock Auto. The only unit they had was a Lares 23512 new unit.
I pulled it out of the box and installed it today. It is the correct rack.
Thanks to everyone who offered their help.
