I recently found that the lower steering column bushing has popped out of place for one reason or another. I have a Borgeson box, so the steering column is already collapsed an appropriate amount. I have sprayed penetrant, loosed the upper column bots, the bolts at the firewall, and the rag joint. I can pretty freely move the shaft inside the column, but I cannot get the bearing to slide at all, let alone back into place.
I have unclipped the collar in this picture to give you a better view of how far the bearing has popped out.
It's really easy to repair when the steering column is not in the car. Now is the time to replace that bushing anyway. It can be damaged easily, including when a PO lowered the steering wheel to remove the gauge cluster, for example.
