I'm looking to buy headers and side pipes for my car. I'm trying to get feedback on brands, material, heat shields, and most important fit and ease of installation. Thanks in advance for any help. This is a no a/c, no ps, no pb car if that matters. Also smog system was removed by first owner.
I have Doug's on my '68BB and while they look and sound great, I have had to massage them to fit and clear the frame, the steering and several types of plug ends. And I still have adjustments that I will have to make. Bought and installed in the last couple of months so this is recent experience. PM me if you want particulars or pictures.
Scroll down a few entries and you'll see perhaps two threads and links to this very subject for BB C3's and the very 'mixed' experiences of some owners, certainly with sidepipes.

Hedman Headers is another quality manufacturer who might be able to help you out. I have a 1968 C3 with a 427 that started life as a solid lifter engine. I have a set of Hedman headers Long tube headers on my 427 and they fit like a glove when I installed them. They are connected to a set of Chambered exhaust pipes and sound like side-pipes but with the sound exiting the rear of the car. Much easier to hear people with this setup and you don't need to wear earplugs while cruising. I remember hearing about the side pipe headers that Hedman made so I would give them a call.
In 34 years of owning my C3 I have never had to ever tighten or re-tighten the header hardware, ever. The Hedman headers have really thick flanges that don't warp on them. I use soft copper or soft aluminum headers gaskets and they too work forever, never had one burn out or get damaged.
I have also never had to use a hammer to re-shape any of the tubes used in the headers from Hedman. The systems went on the car easily and fit like a glove. My car has only Power brakes and power steering with no A/C so there is plenty of room in my engine compartment.
