Default New Door Lock install question. 1979 Corvette

1979 Corvette. So I found and followed a You Tube video showing how to replace the C3 door lock tumbler. The video was very well done, except they conveniently breezed through the installation of the lock retainer clip. Does anyone have a reliable (non-destructive) method or tip on how to get the clip in despite the small access space at the top corner of the door?

I was struggling with long needle-nosed pliers, large screwdriver, and a combination of both. The new retainer was thicker metal than the original part. The original is in good condition, and I don't have any reason not to use it. I ran out of time fiddling with it last night and will try again tonight. But first I will have to either fish out the TWO retainer clips I dropped to the inside of the door. Oops. If I can't fish it out (with a magnet), then I will have to take out the lower access panel to reach them.

I will try again this evening.

Successfully installed the passenger lock mechanism this evening. I used one of those magnetic pickup tools to carefully place the retainer in place. Then with my other hand, I could apply the lateral pressure with either a big flathead screwdriver or long needle nose pliers.

Congratulations, now we all feel unneeded😂 . Sometimes we just need to step back and take another run at things.

I will be back for lots more questions! No doubt about it. In fact, while I did get both door locks working, I did have to disable the anti-theft device on the old lock set. (does it count if antitheft was already not working?). This removal caused the linkage bar (reattached to the lock set), to be just a tad shorter and did not mate up with the lock push rod well. I flattened the bend some to get it to fit.

Also, on the driver side, the entire locking system is very stiff and does not want to move very well. I am guessing excessive corrosion and dried lubricants in the pivots, but also the power lock solenoid might also be keeping things from moving, as it is also not working.
