Default Power Steering Control Valve

1968. Replaced the valve a while back and adjusted it with the nut under the cap. Steering assist was some what uneven and pulled when the wheels where turned sharply.. Lived with the situation until now when I attempted to readjust the valve. The rod extended all the way out when the engine was started but no matter how much I turned the nut counter clockwise it would not retract. Belt is tight, fluid level is correct and the hoses properly routed.

Bad valve or did I damage it by turning the adjusting nut too much? During this time frame I replaced the power steering control valve on my 71 without any issues so I am not certain why the 68 is troublesome. Thanks for any input.

Sounds like you did the right steps, but not sure why the rod didn't retract when you turned the nut counter-clockwise. Perhaps you turned it too far too quickly. There is this in the Chassis Service Manual - CAUTION: Do not turn the nut back and forth more than necessary to balance the valve, as it is a special friction nut.

When the valve is replaced, my understanding is that the front wheels need to be off the ground with the engine running. Then the adjustment is made, by turning the steering wheel all the way, in both directions. I didn’t feel comfortable starting the engine while the car was on jack stands, so I had a Corvette Service Shop do the replacement. I am sure others will chime in.

Nooo. You don't turn the wheel at all while making the adjustment. The steering wheel needs to be dead straight ahead. The ram is disconnected from the frame and the adjustment is made. Front wheels can be on ramps. As long as they are dead straight ahead.
