Default Steering Column Help

Calling on steering column guru's. I found a donor column for my early 69 to harvest the lower shaft from because mine was bent. I have taken ton's of pictures on disassembly and there is always one part that falls out before you can document it. I need to know what this is and where it goes see circled in BLUE. It's a white nylon pin with a spring around it. I cant find it on the exploded diagram.

I have Jim Shea's papers laying around on my hard drive somewhere. I'll look and send them to you. I have the parts book and maintenance procedures. Hopefully it will show you what you're looking for. I am going on vacation for a week starting Wednesday so I'll try to find them before then but no promises. Maybe PM Jim

I have the Jim Shea papers and went through them and I'm still stumped. Thank you.

That goes in your shift bowl. If you look down from the top into the bowl, you will see the hole where it goes. Just use some grease on it to hold it in when you reassemble. I marked the shift bowl in yellow in your picture. That is one of the rare early 69 columns with the longer exposed shift bowl. I have a couple here I redid. Very nice! I know these columns inside and out and am not far from you here in Glen Cove. Let me know if you need any help.

Bill thank you very much for the answer. This column has been a bit of a mystery because it doesn’t match a lot of the diagrams. The car is an early September 68 build. A lot of weird little things.

Any idea on where to get a replacement stickler like this one.

i appreciate your offer to help. I very well may take you up on your offer to help. I’m going to attempt to reassemble tonight.

all the best

Mike

Mike, all the vendors sell the sticker. That is the very early sticker. I have a couple of the later ones here for the two columns I did if you need one fast. A lot of those diagrams are generic from different years. The early 69's like yours differ in a few things internally to the later 69-75 columns. My cell is 706-338-9434 if you need any help. Have you checked the length of your new shaft and the shift tube before you assemble?

Thank again. I saw the repops of the later one. I was going to see if a local print shop can reproduce the early on. Thanks for the offer.

im in no rush. The car is in paint and body now so it’s going to be a bit before I put the repaired column back in.

Mike, make sure you check the length of your new shaft and your shift tube before you reassemble. The shaft in your picture looks collapsed.

Your are correct. That is the bent collapsed shaft. I found a steering column with a ravaged upper shaft locally but the tube and shaft were in great shape. So a little leg work and hopefully we’re good

I think I bought the rest of the columns from the guy you bought that column from. Saw it on Facebook and rushed out but you already beat me to the one early column. Kevin something as I remember. I think there were 6 columns, but the other 5 were 78-82. Glad you got the piece you need because those shafts are hard to find.

you are correct. I was going to buy the whole lot but my wife would probably throw me and the parts out. 🤪 it was quite the score. If you need anything off the old one please let me know and they are yours. They aren’t going to do me any good to pack them away and forget about. So if you need anything please let me know.

So is that #17 fitted into #16 in the parts drawing?

nope that’s the big spring for the tilt mechanism. It was exactly like 69ttop502 described. It went into the bottom of the shift bowl.
