Default Simple Steering Wheel Question...

This should have been easy to figure out but I have failed. I got an aftermarket steering wheel for my '73. It has 6 holes. Well, the original steering wheel also has 6 holes. But they aren't aligned the same. This wheel has screw holes at 12 and 6 o'clock, and the stock wheel has holes at something like 2 and 10 o'clock. They won't line up.

So, what adapter do I need? Some sort of 6 hole to other 6 hole? I know there's a simple answer... (Non-adjustable column.)

The factory ‘73 mounting pattern is 6x2 3/4”, which is very close to 70mm. You would need an adapter like you say. If you don’t want too many clearance issues though it might just be easier to get a different wheel in the same style with the mounting pattern you need.

Thanks for the info. I've been looking at adapters, I just don't know which one to get. Would I be adapting from the stock 6-hole pattern to the new pattern, or use an adapter that uses the 3 holes that are in the hub to the new wheel pattern? I guess that's what's confusing me.

They make aftermarket replacement wheels that fit our cars perfectly. And some at a fair price I might add.
return it and get a wheel that fits.

I chose the wheel because I liked the style of it. Shouldn't be a big a deal to use an adapter for it. Just not finding exactly what I need.

You will have to measure or find out the mounting pattern size of the wheel you want to use.

"Universal 6 Bolt Pattern 2.75" or 70mm BC." Thought since this is a standard pattern, it would be easy to find an adapter to C3 Corvette. That's what I'm looking for.

If your really keen to use this wheel. Why not just drill 6 holes in it? Won't be seen once the horn button is reinstalled.

This is true, drilled and countersunk so the mounting screws will sit flush.

Yes, I could do that. Just thought an adapter for a standard wheel like this would be pretty common. I've seen 1/2" adapters that will fit the new wheel; I could also get one of those and drill holes in it to fit the existing Corvette pattern. This thing:

This is the wheel. I wanted something more modern looking and I'll get a little leg room with the D shape. And it has a little retro look, the three slotted spokes like stock. I have the wood accent interior; this goes pretty well with that too. Was not expensive either. So, I'll make it work.

I actually like that one. Looks a lot like mine except with a flat bottom.

The only issue I would think of with the adapter is if it would affect the horn button components. I know the contact mounts above the steering wheel, you might need to make other modifications if you have the extra length of an adapter. I like the idea of drilling it.

So, I'm guessing that wheel didn't need an adapter and was made to fit Corvette? That's pretty much the look I was going for...

It did not. Only had to convert my steering column because it’s a ‘76. Should bolt right on to your ‘73.

I believe I bought it from Topflight, PN X2530, although I’ve seen other places selling it for less.

Also good to know about your seats, I’ll be contacting them to see if their brown color would fit well with my interior.

The new wheel came with a horn switch, should be easy to just wire that in instead of the stock horn switch set up.

Here are some hub adapters.

https://vswsteeringwheels.com/collec...S6-Hub-Adapter

The steering wheel in my 80 is from VSW (formerly Volante). It bolted right on. They have lots that are a drop-in replacement for our cars (any "S6" wheel). The S6 Step Series are a direct replacement.

Thanks. I'm thinking this one would work but it's more of a replacement hub than an adapter. I ordered one of the 1/2" adapters, they are very cheap, and I plan to fill in then re-drill the outer ring of holes to match the stock hub. If I can't make that work, I'll look at getting this one.

One thing I hadn't considered is the depth of the wheel. I just compared to the stock one; new one is more dished, stock wheel is pretty flat. With a 1/2" adapter, the wheel will be about 2" closer to me than stock. Wonder if that will be a problem...

I'll see if I can handle the wheel being closer to me, but I can save a half inch by just drilling a new set of holes in the wheel. I think in the end, it was a simple question with a simple answer. 4-vettes, I think you win the prize!

So, since I got the 1/2" adapter I modified it and made it work. Was a lot of work and would have been simpler to just drill another set of holes in the new wheel but now I can share what I learned. I took a few photos as I went along and will post them here eventually.

It's closer than the stock wheel but not too bad. I'm putting in new seats, so I'll see how I like it after the driver's seat is in. The wheel came with a cheap plastic horn button, so I got a nice Forever Sharp one. I found a 1.5" Corvette badge I can stick on there but haven't put it on yet. I found a simple way to connect the horn button that I'll post on here later.
