Default Anyone have Hooker headers on a small block ?

Thinking about buying Hooker Super Comp headers and would like to know if anyone has them on their small block. Would like to get at least 3/4 inch primaries but they also come in 7/8 in.

If you have them let me know how they fit etc. , if it is possible to run the 7/8 primaries on a Vette and what the specs are and part numbers for the headers you have installed.

I have a set of super comps on my 69 with a Fast Burn 385 -- love em and no problems.

The 1 3/4 Hooker Super Comps would be more than enough for your motor. The 1 7/8 would be overkill. I am runningthe Hooker Comps on mine and my motor is similar to yours. Mine are 1 5/8. These fit great.

I have a 400 block in the basement that is going in next so that is why I was considering the 1 7/8 inch :D

I am running the Hooker Super Comp. Sidepipe headers on angled heads with no problems. The heads are TFS 23 degree and the primaries on the headers are 1 7/8. Mine is not on the road yet but it sounds good on the 388ci.

Wayne,
I have the 1-7/8 (4 into 1) Hooker ceramic coated headers into twin 2-1/2 inch for my ZZ4. They were recommended for the high CFM and low PD which I connected to to the SS Borlas. Headers fitted perfectly. I don't have the model numbers. Stubby Allan bolt heads are tight, watch overtorquing on aluminum heads.

Jack I didn't know you had Hookers. I am going to have to take a closer look at yours, that is what I want I think.

I read a test article some years ago that demonstrated the small blocks actually lost HP by going with the larger primaries. 1 5/8" turned out to be the most efficient at small block flow rates. Reason had to do with the scavenging efficiency...too large primaries end up not drawing as much of a vacume on the other primary pipes as a given exhaust charge passes down through the collector... for what that's worth...

This is where a dyno comes in handy. Didn't Agostino's have a special that you could rent the dyno for 2 hours for $300, if you are building another engine seems to me that an additional $3 - 500 might be $ well spent for you as it will take the guess work out of the equation. Will also be able to fine tune your carb as well.

My father and I put hooker headers on our 79 L82 back in 1980/1981. Had the headers nickle plated. this was before ceramic coatings were available to the public. Still have the same set of headers 20 years later. A little worse for wear but not too bad. Read an earlier post about header preparation. Will probably wrap the headers in tape and paint. should help with appearence.

Wayne,
I have to admit, the presence of the HOOKER headers in my ZZ4 has been a well guarded secret until now. Grand Sport Motors recommended and installed them several years ago. Drop in any time and I’ll show you. I had the carb jets and rods changed and I’m waiting for the spring thaws to take the car out of hibernation to the first available Dyno.

That doesn’t sound right to me, as it assumes that the suction or ventury effect of ever increasing primary velocities, create an ever increasing suction in junction of the secondary. It further assumes that the suction of the primaries overtakes the back pressure or friction drop of the smaller primaries. Obviously that is not the case and although not scientific, we could use the extreme example of 1 inch primaries that should produce the highest suction but also the highest PD. The funny thing is that race cars use the highest available primaries and secondaries, without concentrating on reducing primaries. Does this make sense?

What makes sense to me is to get headers that are the same size or bigger than my exhaust ports and I do not see any 1 5/8 inch headers that are capable of doing that.

My heads have pretty big exhaust ports and I need pipes that do not restrict the flow therefore I will go with 1 3/4 minumum but probably 1 7/8 in.

Jack, will drop by when the weather gets a little warmer. Is there any chance of getting the part number since our cars are the same ? :D

I'll dig up the partnumber for the ceramic coated 1-7/8 HOOKERs this weekend and I'll let you know. These Hookers were supposed to match the exhaust ports of the ZZ4 for maximum performance.
