Today's job on the 1977 C3 is to sort out the screen wash, at some point the pump broke and rather than sort it out properly a new screen wash system was installed in the engine compartment just in from of the wipers. This is now no good as the tank cracked, but it looked out of place anyway.
So I decided to take the wash bottle out from the bottom, I removed the plate and the vapour capture can. I know that the vapour capture can is supposed to do, but it wasn't connected to the carb, so again another useless item under the hood.
Seen as I'm putting a LS engine in this at some point and it wasn't connected anyway I'm not going to put it back in.
Do I blank off the pipe or so I let it vent in to free air in the engine bay or elsewhere?
Also my '77 has that funny alarm system with the key on the wheel arch. In the engine bay there is a red/orange pair going to the key switch and a yellow/black pair going in to something else. Anyone have any idea what the yellow/black pair is for?
The yellow/ black pair. If right with the other wires going to the switch is most likely a white/black pair that goes to the anti tamper switch. A switch over the switch in the fender. If the key switch is tampered with this switch sets off the alarm. Likely the white wire looks yellow with age. As the pair going to the alarm switch are actually orange/pink.
As per the vent line coming up the drivers side of the car. Plug it off or better still. Plug it off back in the rear wheel well. You will see back there where the rubber line from the tank meets the steel line. Block it off back there. Install A vented gas cap. Done.
I'll block it off at the tank and make sure the cap is vented.
It's likely an anti-tamper switch near the lock , but here is a picture. I'll probably keep the lock but all this useless stuff is coming out of the engine bay unless it's needed.
The original 75-77 gas caps had a Pressure Relief built into the cap...
Looking at the Parts & Illustration Catalog the 75-77 cap calls out a cap with a Higher Relief pressure...
Not sure the original cap relieved both positive and negative pressures as there was a path to escape negative pressure through the EVAP circuit...
Here are 2 NOS NDH fuel caps, the one on the Left is a NOS 1975-1977 cap and the one on the Right is a NOS 75-77 replacement cap, notice the double valve of the cap on the Right...
Something to think about if capping off the EVAP circuit...
I think that went into the bin back in the very early 80's.
that's how much I personally think you need to think about it.
A vented cap and your done here.
