Seems interesting a 4.6L can make 1200hp. I have been considering the northstar engine for some tinkering and playing for awhile. Just dont have the money right now. Performance parts for them are few and far between and really expensive. But 300 stock hp. a couple of mods and I can get it in my vette. Seems like it ought to be worth playing with
I had a 97 deville, and that car was a lot faster than it should be for it's size. Really fun. The only problem was it started using coolant at about 75K miles. Probably a head gasket. I think the new caddy vette will use a northstar mounted fore-aft. Joe
It's an awesome engine. My dad is installing on his his street rod. The Northstar's come with forged internals and is basicly (with some differences) a 1L smaller verion of the LT5. With different cams (4 cams at $100 a piece), headers, and port and polishing they are getting 500hp out of these motors. There are blower and turbos also available. :D
The problem with putting a Northstar engine in anything is that the water pump is driven off the flywheel end of the engine. You have to reshape your firewall to clear all of the stuff hung off the back of the engine. Notice the distributor, or whatever it is on a Northstar pointing straight back on the back end of the engine going into that street rod?

We relocated the water pump and we could have put it really anywhere we wanted. There is a guy online that installed on in his '98 Camaro. The ignition is similar to a LS1 in that there is no didtributor just one coild pack for each cylinder. You could actually run a carb if the person wanted to.

Here is one with a dual quad setup.
How do you relocate the water pump? I though it had to be driven off the back. I would like to put one in a Camaro someday.

Re: Cadillac engines (Russ Bellinis)
Still would make an interesting project. I am seeing how much the local wrecking yard wants for the 300hp L37 HP engine. Seems like a good place to start
My dad has a '96 or '94 (I can't remember) Cadillac El Dorado. The motor is neat, but I just couldn't see putting anything but a small block/big block Chevy in my 'Vette. Just my opinion though...I like to keep things simple for the most part.
I'm still curious about the water pump drive. I've never seen how they drive it stock. I thought it would be gear or chain drive like a timing chain inside a cover. How is the pump driven and what do you have to do to relocate it? Can you put a conventional pulley on it, and drive it with a belt?

I found this about the changes that had to be made to the Northstar for it to be used in the new XLR to turn it to a front/rear position rather than side/side.
The first longitudinal application of the 4.6-liter Northstar V-8. To optimize coolant and oil flow for the new application, the water pump was moved to the front of the engine, which required changing all of the coolant passages and engine cavities - in effect, a virtual redesign of the block and heads.
I have heard those drop into Feiro's with little fabbing. Would make
for an interesting little rocket.
The hook up is a walk in the park, but the wiring harness is a nightmare. Sensors and terminals are completely different, and as few months back, nothing was available, everything would have to be custom made. I looked into that.
