Below is an image of the rivets used on the wiper door hinges. Has anyone actually installed these rivets?
What is the diameter of the rivet shank and what mandrel did you use to install the rivets?
I'm considering just adding the mandrel to my hydraulic press to install these.
As near as I can tell, the mandrel face shape would be similar to this image:
I used a tool that I got from the vendor and used it and a hammer or small sledge. It wasn't fun doing it by myself as it is difficult to hold the punch, hit it with a hammer and hold the assembly vertical. I did get it done and installed and it works.
Make sure you take pictures of both sides before you start drilling out the old rivets. The assembly can go back together more than one way, but only one way works. A couple of the curved pieces could go in upside down and then the linkage will not work.
Watch what you are doing and take your time. A good press would have been nice, but my hammer and punch got the job done. An extra set of hands to help hold it while you are doing the assembly would certainly help.
That looks very similar to the discontinued one below.
These are referred to as "Half-hollow rivet punch"
I just need to figure out what size the rivet is. I have been avoiding drilling one of mine out until I knew I had the rivet tool at the ready.
My guess is around 0.22".
I'll wait to receive one of the replacement rivets and then measure it.
Hello,
If you're going through the process of replacing rivets make note of the fact that the white nylon/plastic flat washers remain white.
So the linkage parts were painted before the wiper door linkage was assembled.
RT's photo shows that nicely.

My wiper assembly is covered with overspray...hard to tell how it was originally. Was the whole assembly painted flat or satin black? Was the assembly then exposed to body color overspray?
Hello
Since the white washers remained white I believe the black-out in the wiper bay was done at the same time as the engine compartment black-out.....after body color. The black continued up the windshield posts and header.
Certainly the wiper door linkage wasn't in place yet.
The wiper trans missions?? If no transmissions.... no wiper arms or blades or hoses/clips.
VERY,VERY messy area even when the car left St.Louis.

I don't remember exactly the finish on the linkage, but I know it wasn't flat black. I thought that I might have an old rivet in the garage, but I must have gotten rid of them during one of my clean-ups. As I remember taking the old rivets out I just used a drill and removed most of the compressed head of the rivet and then used a punch to get it out of the assembly. Getting the old parts out wasn't the hard part, getting the new rivet in and hammered into place by myself was not fun. My linkage did not have overspray on it, so it must have been installed on the assembly line.
As I also remember the rivet kit only supplies rivets and bushings for the two ends, not the rivets in the middle area where the vacuum piece operates the whole mess. The wiper cover must have been painted as a separate piece.
