What do you start with when lapping valves ? What grit and manufacture? Thanks for all suggestions.
I've used CLOVER brand since I began doing this work. Decades since, CLOVER has been acquired by Henkel adhesives' Loctite. But retains brand CLOVER on label.
Many grits available. Depends entirely on WHY you use it and how rough the surfaces are to begin with. If your need's only to witness; suggest layout dye e.g. DYKEM.
WHY do you need to lap these valves ? Old worn valves-seats ? New ? Verify-Witness only ? I ask, because nowadays, many shops' Cutters produce a much finer surface than grinding Stones aka Rocks. True; I've made a few silk purses from a sow's ear.

Get the Clover in 400 grit. It will put the finishing touches on a decent valve job. Will also give u a good indication ( gray line) on the valve n seat to show the contact surface.
Just touching up a valve on a John Deere tractor! I see clover made by Henkel comes in large containers so that route will not happen. Also would like to rebuild my L-82 in the future and being a Gemin I am in to every thing. My interests grow every day in mechanical engineering

Clover also comes in smaller tins. It also used to come in a small Double-sided tin. One tin, two compartments, two lids, two different grits. I still have one that I've probably had for fifty years.
Permatex currently markets a small tube of paste that's essentially an equivalent. I see both 1 1/2 oz & 3 oz.
it's labelled Valve Grinding Compound.
*in your deere
? are the valves in head OR in block ?
? will you lap them by hand or with a power tool? The wooden stick hand-tool with a suction cup on either end works good.
