I have an antenna of sorts under my rear-view mirror. I also have a power antenna. Anyone know what the antenna on the windshield is? Do I need it??? Most 79's do not have the windshield antenna.

Did a previous owner add XM radio?

 

Some early remote start systems used an antenna mounted on the inside of the windshield.

 

No XM

 

Look around the lower edges of the windshield to see if there is any etched in manufactures labels.
The windshield in my 73 had the label “Safe Lite” etched into the lower center area, indicating a prior owner replaced the windshield.
Yours is probably a replacement with the antenna within the glass.

 

It's not within the glass. It's on the glass on the inside of the car. I had one with the antenna in the glass. This is something else...

After market alarm, remote start.
Do you have a fob?
Is there a siren under the hood?
Had that on my old 98 Malibu.

 

That’s what my 79 had. Car alarm thin wire taped over, not exactly like yours but probably same use.
i bet there is plenty more

I used an similar antenna on my 80 for the radio to bypass the external OEM one. So it's either for a radio or add on accessory you don't have the fob/controller for. Im thinking just remove or leave if you can use as car radio antenna if anyone uses a radio anymore.
