I'm looking for a trailer hitch that will hide behind my rear lic. plate. I did a search on this and found some of us members have one. Unfortunately I cant view the images on old posts for some reason. So if anybody has a pic that they would like to post I would be happy.
I seen the one at www.hitch-web.com but would like to see some other hidden options
And yes I know the vette is not for towing but I like to drive it in the mountains and would like to bring my small, lite, single axle camp trailer and stay a night.
I've been curious about a hitch, too - since Momma and I will probably be driving the '82 up to Bowling Green for Cruise-In IV. I'd like to be able to rent one of those dinky little luggage trailers to put extra stuff in to take up there. (Last time we drove up in the van, so we had TONS of room.)
I just bought one on ebay this week. Here is the auction with a picture of GM's hitch for the '77. I bought one for my first '77 and towed a hardtop tent trailer with it..no problems. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...tem=2402764403
Binnie, Is that the one that came stock - and hid behind the license plate ?
I'm guessing 'no' - but whadda I know ?
I thought that the 'hidden' hitch was a small receiver type that accepts
a steel bar with ball attached.
I want to do this (someday) , too. :yesnod:
Yes, this is the stock hitch. I believe if I remember correctly (25 years ago) that the black steel brackets are bolted to the steel bumper (sandwiched between the rubber bumper cover and bumper). The chrome hitch then bolts to the 2 black steel brackets. Max towing capacity is 1000 lbs I believe with a max hitch weight of 80 lbs. I know that I never had any problems towing the hardtop trailer which had hitch brakes.
Ive seen them on other Vettes but couldn't find anything decent. I ended up building my own. It's a 1" reciever. I use it to tow my 'race trailer' :smash: with two tires, tools and the camping stuff...
I don't have a spare so it was easy, but you're 77 has more room behind the frame. A 69 has literally zero.
I think that you and I are looking for the same type of hitch. It hides behind the license plate, which folds down to expose the 2" receiver. I have been searching for one of these too. A couple of members have posted about them in the past but most people have what have been discussed on this thread. If I could get some decent pictures, I could easily make one. And I agree with you, I think the hidden receiver hitch was the type that GM offered on the Vette.
ive been considering this too...since our 2000 mile round trip to Carlisle last august
my neihbor has an old Yamaha motorcyle trailer for sale that i think i could pick up cheap...like $100...
it needs paint and a ton of TLC but it would be a fun project...
im thinkin maybe paint it to match the car and a Corvette emblem on the rear... :yesnod:
