Default Choke Adjustment

Good Morning All,
I have a 770 Street Avenger on 454 HO create engine. I have been running it on the car for about three years. In my journey for the perfect tune or as my wife says, "Can't leave well enough alone" I got to the point where I had to start from the beginning. So I pulled the carb reset the transfer slots, Got a steady 15" manifold vac from the idle mix screws, timing verified at 15 deg initial all in at 36 deg at 3000 rpm and 8 deg adv from vac adv. I have a steady beautiful idle with no more too rich gas smell. Off idle I get a nice crisp response and the car runs great!

Except for the choke. At cold start the choke plate is closed, electric choke is functioning the engine will start, however it will idle at about 1000 RPM and cough a lil bit for about 2 minutes then the RPMs will slowly increase to about 1500 RPMs where it will stay. The car will drive fine until the choke comes off and I get my now perfect idle. I am in So. Cal and it 80 degs. The electric choke is adjusted in the middle. before I start messing with it I wanted to reach out for any input on why the choke is not coming on fully at a cold start.

Thanks

At 80 degrees air temperature with the choke completely closed it's too tight.
Loosen the screws, turn it to just completely closed and then loosen so it's about 1/16" open. Tighten the screws.

Ok MelWff, Did not get on it until Monday. I choose to waste Sunday on a totally uneventful Super Bowl that I did not care about in the first place. But thanks you were right-on. I cracked the throttle and turned the choke housing full CW to close the plates then CCW to open about a 16th. The housing went one notch CCW of the center mark. The idle came on to a beautiful 1500 RPM at start up. but it was noon and 80 deg in Los Angeles. So I will recheck it tomorrow in the morning. it is supposed to getting cooler here.

I get confused in the Holley Choke setting instructions. They read that if the choke comes off too soon turn the housing CCW if it comes off too late turn the housing CW. I don't know how to interpret that. My symptoms were an unsteady, low fast idle, coughing for a few minutes until the choke plate open then the fast idle smoothed out and kicked to 1500 RPM. I went CCW one notch to solve the problem.

Sounds like you solved the issue. My understanding is at 72 degrees it should just be fully closed, no additional pressure, thus at 80 it should just be a crack open.
