Default Head Light upgrade to LED

I was wanting to change the head lights from the OE , I tried several online options but they want you to modify your headlight brackets because of the depth of the LED’s. I bought Summit Racing direct fit. I’m happy with the fit, but the high beam’s don’t work and Summit has no tech support to fix! Any recommendations? Am I overthinking?

I would check your connections and try again. Do you have a link to the ones you installed?

I used the Octane Lighting kit. Plug and play, works great, but suffers from being significantly less expensive than the Holley.

Regular price: $298.00
Sale price: $209.96

Save yourselves a TON of money and buy a set of Hella Glass/Euro lenses 2 Low/2 Hi beam for about $200 and buy a quality LED bulb and you will have spectacular white controlled light with no dark spots and sharp beam cutoff (euro lenses) to prevent blinding oncoming traffic!

My 78 still has 4 hella euro's lead crystal lenses from 1983 when I installed them, illegal back then...simply a superior lighting experience for over 40 years now......

Finding a quality LED bulb is a challenge in itself too. But good tip!

Just installed Octane Lighting 5-3/4 Stock OEM Retro Style Glass Metal Headlight LED's. What a huge improvment. Easy install with no modifications to the vehicle. Now I can run my high beams without tripping the circuit breaker.

I also put the Octanes in my '79. No mods required. They are a HUGE improvement over the stock halogens. I just had to readjust the aim of each bulb after install. The Octanes sit slightly different in the rings.

I run the octane lighting LEDs without the adapter so i have 4 low beams with 4 high beams....i can finally see my side of the road on low beam when a new car with HID lights comes at me or a dope with incorrect aligned LEDs or their high beams on...and i tried the wiring upgrade with relays and H1 and H4 Hellas...

I use aircraft landing lights for high beams, they are extremely bright, I usually flash them when somebody with the "look how bright my lights are!" approaches me and nearly blinds me

  • Octone Light set
  • Bulb Type: - Generation 5 - H4 (9003) LED Low Beam / High Beam Headlight with Canbus Error Canceller Plugs
  • Canbus Error Free Electrical plugs prevent any headlight error codes
  • Wattage: 40W / EACH PC
  • Luminous Flux: 8000LM / Set ,4000LM / Each Bulb
The Octane lightening kit certainly looks like a good deal as an upgrade to the 4 headlight system on the C3's. One spec that stood out was that Octane lists the LED bulbs as 4000 Lumens each and also lists the set at 8,000 LM which I assume means 8,000 Lumens for the low beams (2 lights) and 8,000 Lumens for the High Beams (2 lights) ^^^^^^?

Another difference between a more traditional lead Chrystal Lense like the Hella Euro I listed previously and these Octane light set is that the Hellas (and others) low beam H4 lenses are different from the Hella H1 High beam designs, for a very good reason. The Octane system appears to have 4 lenses that are exactly the same for the hi/low LED bulb outer lights and the single filament LED bulb high beam. Probably does not matter to most people but there is a difference:

Key Beam Pattern Differences

  • H1 Beam (Inner/High Only): This lens is optimized for long-distance reach. Because it uses a single-filament bulb, the reflector and lens fluting are designed solely to project a concentrated, narrow punch of light far down the road. It provides a more focused high beam than the high-beam setting on an H4 lens.
  • H4 Beam (Outer/Dual): This lens is a compromise by design. It must provide a sharp horizontal cutoff for the low beam (to prevent blinding oncoming traffic) and a broader spread for the high beam. While versatile, the high beam on an H4 is typically less "intense" at a distance compared to a dedicated H1 unit.

I like my Fiber Optics system on my 1971 so I will not upgrade since there isn't a light source on the back of the bulbs to make that work. The old bulbs have a nipple that allows light to be present where the FO tip is installed. Halogens are just fine for me. I did install relays to get the high current out of the dash switch.

The Dapper lighting offered a wiring set up that let you run all 4 headlights as low beams and then all 4 as high beams. Dapper are very expensive.

Ha! I did that in the good old days when J.C. Whitney sold them. Stock bulbs were line 15,000 candle power and the front lens glass was curved with triangles to diffuse light. The aircraft landing lights were 200,000 CP, flat front lens and the look at the bulb (when off) you could see it reflected the beam into a cone rather then being a diffuse beam.
