I have 4 8' 100 watt flourescents in a two car garage. They are centered over the Vetts stall, plenty of light there :D But the other stall needs two more so I can see there, maybe I'll put in a seperate switch for them...
BTW I used to have 2 500 watt Halogens pointing at the Vette. They were pathetic compared to the 400 watts of flourescent I have now!
I use some 60 watt 4ft low ambient flourescents. They are meant for walk in freezer boxes. When the temp is down around 10 deg they still light up instantly. The balasts actually start with a bang
My dad designs commercial kitchens - he got them for me - not cheap though.
We have halogen track lighting. Bought it at Home Depot. It gives a very nice bright light and can be aimed to whatever area youre working on. Plus it's low profile and was one of th few lights which would fit above the garage door when the doors are opened. ~Juliet
I kinda split the difference. I have 4 fluorencent fixtures at the corners and one by my storage shelves, then I have 2 eight foot track lights on the sides, and 1 six foot track light pretty much over the engine bay. I have a total of 8 50 watt halogen bulbs on the track lights. This allows me to illuminate any space I want.
I use my garage for finish carpentry as well as working on the car so I need LOTS of light. That way I have a pretty even chance of keeping all my fingers  .
