I've been told my '79 heads arent' going to cut it in terms of their power potential. I am looking for an inexpenisve iron head to replace them with. Furtherore, I am leaning towards on older pair of used 882 heads, w/ no work done to them. What are the 882 flow numbers compared to the double hump 461 heads and the new Vortec wonder-heads? Will they support 350ish horsepower with a cam like the XE262? Any help, links, or suggestions would be greatly appreceated. Thanks! :seeya
I dare say that 99% of the folks on the Forum will tell ya that 882 heads are only good for use as boat anchors as far as flow rates go. You can buy 'em on Ebay for next to nothing. Vortec Heads flow much better, but you have to buy a Vortec Manifold and new self aligning rockers also which puts the price up with the Torquer Heads from World and others. I got a rebuilt set of 416 heads (orig. made for 305 HO motor, 64cc, 2.02/1.6 valves) on Ebay from a company in Houston, TX for 365 bucks +shipping. All NEW moving parts w/springs good out to .510 lift. A lot cheaper than the Vortec setup, and I dont have to wonder what to do with a perfectly good used intake and rocker arms. Hope this helps and GOOD LUCK!
The "492's" and the comparable "186's" were on the 370 HP LT1,,these are really great heads and with a little pocket porting will support at LEAST 400 HP! I have found these heads on E-Bay for less than $250 at times. A great article here! http://www.chevytalk.com/tech/engine/SBC_Heads
Hmmmmm.Interesting Stuff. I was shying away from the Vortecs because of the additional equipment needed, and I was hoping to reuse my Performer Manifold, unless its going to prevent me from making decent power. What can I say, I'm a cheapskate
Not stupid question, they are under the valve covers inbetween the rockers on either cylinders 1 and 3 or on clyinders 6 and 8. There are also various other numbers, but the one your looking for should be 6 or more digits.
The heads that I have on my car are the 441 casting and work quite well. Open chamber with all of the accessory bolt holes and very little port matching work to do.
