I'm planning to drop a 200-4r into manual car w/ fixed crossmember.
Will there be any way to do this without cutting out the crossmember? I'm sure this will be ovious when I trial fit one, just curious if anyone knows. Lot's of info on converting from 350 or 400 to 200 4-r or 700 r4 but not much when going from manual.
WS, looks like you have a bit of modifying ahead of you. According to an article on overdrives from Chevy High Performance your manual trans is only 22 1/4 in. long and the trans mount is only 14 in. from the front of the trans. but the 200-R4 is 27 7/8 in long and the mount is 27 in. from the front of trans. This means that you would have to shorten your driveshaft, and move the trans mount to the rear by 13 in. At the very least you would have to modify the trans crossmember, if not cut it out. You would also have to change the yoke. It may be quite a bit of work, but you will enjoy the results. Hershey :chevy :chevy :chevy
WS, Let me correct the above info. When you add the depth of the bellhousing to the above manual trans figures you would be closer to the overdrive numbers, but I do not have those dimentions. Maybe someone has those numbers or can get to theirs easily to measure for you. Hershey :chevy
My fixed x-member is connected to the trans. with a plate about 6 inches long. The effectively moves the M20 mounting position to be about the same as A 200 r-4. It looks like the 200 r 4's trnas mount will sit right on top of the x-member (without that plate).. Can anyone confirm this?
You may be able to install/ remove it with the engine as one unit. Having worked with my own car when the crossmember was welded in, I know the wrestling involved when removing the 4spd ;) .
I put a 700r4 into my Muncie '72 car...and what I call a mounting shoe was modified as to height and toward the rear for the tranny....
since then, I have taken the cross member out for a tranny repair...I just cut the thing abut 2" inboard of each frame rail....and angle bracket welded in place some supports, and through bolted it for reinstall....allmost the same deal as the auto cars have...but custom for sure....
I think a 200 would be much easier, as it's shorter and should match the muncie mount about exactly, from what I hear....
