Just starting to look like spring, supposed to be 50 this weekend. Start her up Saturday and, after much digging in hopes that it was something else, the booser took it's final dump! The parts store in town can have a rebuild tomorrow. Tonight I'll start taking it apart. I'm gonna try to reach the 4 bolts from hell by taking out the speedo and tack assembly rather that take the whole dash out. Anyone with an '80 ever try? If so, let me know. Otherwise I'll report tomorrow. Can I say DAMN here? :reddevil
yeah, you can say damn but the filter cuts you off at poopie, kiss and butt. go figure. :jester
50? brrr. it was 76 yesterday in vegas. sounds great now but i'm going to regreat all the smack i've been talking this winter when we get to 110*+ during the summer. :nonod:
never had to do the booster on my '81 which should be nearly identical but i would seriously check to see if you have brake fluid in there when you get the master cylinder out. the rear seal of the master cylinder leaks right into that booster and just eats up the diaphragm on the booster. :smash:
i just did mine on a '71 auto the only thing i had to remove was the seat and some duct work wasn't that hard at all as long as you have the right tools.
I am just finishing mine up on my '79. The nuts can be removed and installed by going under the dash with a socket, universal joint and a long extension. Putting them back on requires some amount of dextarity but my old hands were able to get the job done. Be sure that you check the clevis for the correct length.
Of course it's a whole lot easier when you have everything out of your way
It's even easier when the firewall is removed from the car. :lolg: :lolg: :lolg:
I took mine off after removing the firewall. The booster was off before my air
compressor could pump all the way up. I don't know why everyone thinks
that it's so difficult. :D :D :jester :jester :D :D
Seriously - if you can get the tach/speedo dash panel out of the way - then you should have a straight shot. Also, replace all the bulbs back there - while it's out.
On my 73 the best tool for the job was my 12 year old grandson that is 1/2 the size of me and has much thinner hands. Works great once you show him what you need. Try it or borrow the neighbor.
Not trying to spook you, but I tried 4 rebuilt boosters and none of them worked right. Yeah, that means I removed the booster many, many times. I finally bought a brand new GM booster and it works perfectly.
First time I replaced the booster it took me 3 hours to get the thing out. The last time I clocked myself at 13 minutes! I didn't remove anything in the interior except the plastic piece behind the pedals (covered a nut).
Got it out in about 1 - 3/4 hours. I took the speedo and tack assembly out, but the only value in that was to see a little better. There's a trough that the wipers lay in that dips down so you can't really reach them from the speedo area anyway. I'm fairly scrawny and I gotta say that it was tough reaching everything, but it can be done. Hope the parts guy has the replacement as promised so I can get ready for the weekend and put this behind me. Hope I'm luckier than zwede and get a good one. I'm not really interested in being able to do it in 13 minutes :D .
Footnote: Of the 1 - 3/4 hours, about 30 minutes was beer time to congratulate myself for not getting trapped in that mess :D :D
Hi Folks, Have you added the wonderful tolls called GEARWRENCH not the seras junk bit the REAL gerawrench. WORK LIKE a charm in all those bast places that my FAT OLD HANDS can not get to.
