Need to buy a timing light and was wondering if anyone has purchased and used the "Flaming River" light from Summit. It is found on page 280 of their 35th anniversary catalog. I'm interested in it because you don't have to hook up to the battery. Thx in advance.
You don't have to hook up to the battery behind the seat. Just under the driver's side fender where the windshield washer fill sits there is a junction that the alternator is connected to. You can hook the positive there and ground it to an engine part.
I went with an adjustable advance timing light from Sears. It cost me about 60 dollars and it great. The adjustable lights are the way to go. They make diagnosing timing problems so much easier.
There is a **** on the back of the timing light that lets you adjust the advance. Instead of measuring advance on the timing tab you would set the light to say 12 degrees advanced and align the balancer mark with the 0 on the timing tab. With an adjustable light setting timing at 2500-3000 rpms and getting the 36-38 degrees advance required for optimum peformance is alot easier.
WOW!! That would make timing changes soooo easy!! Let me make sure I have this right: To set your initial at 10 degrees, you just dial 10 on the light and turn the distributor until the balancer mark is at 0 degrees on the timing tab. To set your advance to 36 degrees at 2500 rpm, just dial in 36 on the light, rev to 2500 and the balancer mark should be at 0 on timing tab. If not, then change the springs in distributor. Is this right? Man, if it is, I'm going to Sears today to get one as they're havin a 50% off sale today.
I have had a Craftsman (made by Equus) non adjustable for years, and it was time to upgrade.
I treated myself this year and bought an Equus/Innova "5568 Professional Digital Timing Light". I heard they were "the best", so it was a Christmas present to me from me!!! Summit had the best price! It is a tad expensive, but you get what you pay for!
Now I can't wait to use it after Lars' recurve kit is in - that's also waiting to get installed, with the dual Spals, Rallye's, ........ gawd, it never DOES stop, does it!
I love my Flaming River light!! I have heard of problems with the "dial back" lights when used with a MSD, but all I am interested in is total timing and my balancer is degreed. The only downside is that the replacement "pickup" is almost as expensive as a new light, and mine melted on a header.

I went into Advance Auto last summer and bought a timing light and also asked for a Dwell Meter. Had to talk to 4 people before I found an old timer that knew what a dwell meter was. Guess that dates me.

That's another reason I got the Equus/Innova - it has a digital dwell / tach / voltage also. It does date us, though!
