Default Rear bearing difficulty??

For my C5 brake upgrade I am going to need to take off the rear caliper brackets. While I am at it I might as well install new bearings. What all is involved with the rear bearings?

I just got finished with the fronts, but I know there is a lot more involved with the rear.

thanks

C3 rear wheel bearings can be a real PITA, but if you have the right tools it's a piece of cake. You will need an old spindle, would suggest having a machine shop take a little off the bearing surface to make it an easy fit, or buy a setup tool. Then you will need a dial indicator to test the end play and shims to get the final end play to .001 - .008 (with .001 being preferred as parts will wear in to become a little looser) I'm not sure about the compatability of C5 brakes to the C3 parts, I am just not familiar with the C5 setup. The C3 spindle support might not line up with the caliper mounts used on the C5's? Difference in parking brakes as well?

I already have the details worked out with the brakes.

I think I am a little confused. What is the old spindle for?

thanks

Ther old spindle can be used as a set up tool providing it has been machined. Otherwise you will need to buy a set up tool. You will most likely need to take the assemblys apart several times to get the shimming right, very difficult to do without the set up tools because of the press fit.

No can do with out proper tools: Press, setup, shock mount knock out and spindle installer. I set all of mine @ .003. That's most of the rebuild shops referred!

I have a step by step picture guide on my website I made a few years ago of how to do it. http://www.montygwilliams.com/rearbearings.html

Check out Monty's site, it's all the information you need. I set mine up to .003 as well, mainly because after trial and error I felt that .001 ended up being too tight. I know Monty set his up to .001 and they worked, so it must be alright anyway. The things you will need are a method of getting the spindle out, a setup tool to set up bearing endplay. You need this because when you go together on final assemble you install the outer bearing and seal, then pull the bearings onto the spindle for a TIGHT press fit. You need to be able to easily remove the bearings to try a few different shim combinations before final assembly. Then the assembly tool may not be a necessity, but it sure does make final assembly easy. Depending on how you remove your spindles you may not need the spindle knocker. I used a homemade slidehammer for knocking mine out.

I just bought the setup and intallation tools from ecklers. But, it looks like you have to press the bearing onto the setup tool then use the spacers for adjustment. I thought this setup tool was used so you don't have to press the bearings on and off.
Do you know if you have to press the bearing on and off of the setup tool?

The setup tool is made to slip through the bearings easily. Again, you can substitute a machined old spindle for the setup tool.

Excellent webpage Monty. Do I not need the $500 worth of tools that Eckler's says I need?

All you really need is the bearing setup tool and the spindle install tool. I'll shoot you an email of a pic of the tool that I use to get the spindles out. For some reason my Corvetteforum web page file manager won't let me upload images.

I measured the setup tool and check it against my spindle and they were exactly the same (1.375") size. I don't have my rear bearings yet, so i can't measure them to compare. Although I have been told that the bearings should just slip on the setup tool it looks like to me like they will have to be pressed on.
justin, I would like to see the pictures that you took.

Blue73Red, I'll send you the pics tonight. They are on my other computer and it doesn't want to connect to the internet right now for some reason, and I haven't gotten around to networking the two yet, and all of my drives run off of this one. Send me an email so that I don't forget to do it.
