Re: Hooker Sidepipe - Glasspack vs. Reverse Flow? (yellow 72)
Yellow 72,
You are absolutely right! Bence and Grandsport both prefer no mufflers at all. But if you desire a reasonable amount of silencing allowing you to drive among those who don't like the noise as much as many of us, The JCL's (while still loud) give me a much better compromise.
The noise of my uncapped JCL's was about the same as the very restrictive Hooker glasspack insert with louvered 1.5" center tube. The flow of the JCL's seems to be about the same as open 3"+ pipe or perforated glass pack, not louvered center. For me the JCL's are a very good combination of performance with reasonable muffling.
By the way, I found that uncapping the JCL's was worth about 45rwhp on the dyno and added about 4db's to the sound level. It also gives the car more of a glass pack type rumble removing the somewhat metalic (Flowmaster like) sound of the capped baffles.
Re: Hooker Sidepipe - Glasspack vs. Reverse Flow? (garagedweller2)
Chuck, I have 30" long 2.5" perferated core (not louvered) glasspack mufflers in my side tubes. These mufflers are at least twice as long as the Dynomax bullet mufflers which I believe helps some.
I don't consider them to be obnoxiously loud at all. I don't know the sound level of the JCL's are so I can't compare. I drive my car daily (15k in last year) and come home from work at 3AM or so about 3-4 times a month. I have not had any neighbors complain or have I been pulled over for noise.
I do agree that with your HP numbers, you would need a 3" pipe and I can't comment on how loud that would be. But let's not forget what started this thread. We are talking about a 350 that is currently stock and would like room to grow into more HP. I think a 2 1/4" perferated glasspack in this configuation would be quiet enough and not pose a threat to rob some HP.

Chris,
Don't be too sure about that. I have it on good authority that your neighbors are planning an ambush. April Fools Day is just around the corner and they are planning to fill your pipes with expanding foam insulation!

Chuck
Ouch  A modern version of the 'ol potato in the tail pipe :smash:

Chuck
Following Chuck's advice on this one, I uncapped/modified my JCL's from the get-go. I went from open pipes to uncapped JCL's and while my 454 is much milder than Chuck's... I could not tell any loss of HP b/w the two.
Ok, let me throw some more questions out on this same thread now that I got a good viewing base...
68427 said he was using Stahl headers. For some reason I thought my ONLY choice was Hooker headers. Now that I know there is at least one other option, how many other manufactures make side-pipe headers and what is the costs/power ratio?
Also, there is lots of talk about Caps and baffles, how do these things work?
Re: Hooker Sidepipe - Glasspack vs. Reverse Flow? (pingdashf)
Headman also makes side pipe headers. I believe they are headers only and have a 3" collecter pointing towards the sides as opposed to the rear like normal headers. I don't have any experience with these or the Stahl headers, but I would assume that they might work with stock style side pipes or require some fab work to get them installed.
