That's it folks, I'm now VERY satisfied with my car's performance level. Don't feel compelled to do more performance upgrades (at least for now). Stock L82, desmogged, OD tranny, true duals with H-pipe, new Edelbrock QJet, and Lars Recurve Kit.
And it's the recurve kit that's the crowning glory -- breathes fire into that engine. The guy who helped me do it was skeptical at first, but he was very impressed when the job was finished.
I've read quite a few posts about Lars' recurve kit and I'm very interested. But, what is the difference in Lars' kit and any off the shelf kit? No disrespect intended. Just curious.
Lars' kit is plug 'n play. One set of springs, one set of weights. Replacement vacuum advance unit is preset and fixed. Very detailed instructions. No fuss, no muss.
It's also unique in that it comes with shims to set the distributor shaft end play back to original specs.
Oh, and ask anyone around here...Lars is THE guru!
Here is the distributor gear shimmed to 0.005". It was at 0.025" when I started and checked! The acceptable range is 0.002-0.007".
How does his kit differ? Check the weights. The top is stock, the middle Moroso and the bottom Lars. You will note quite a difference in his version. I will leave it to Lars to explain why his configuration is machined that way. I cannot!
cool...HEI is a kick azz distributor as well in my opinion. I wish I could afford a tach drive HEI for my 73. Right now in running a recurved point style dist with pertronixII and 50k volt coil. It works pretty good. I got HEI in my truck and love it. Glad to hear it improved your ride.
I find that people can talk at length on a subject but to gain a true understanding of what is being discussed, a few pic/images put matters into a clearer perspective. Glad to be of assistance.
I've had mine a few weeks but, havent got around to the install. Hope to do it this weekend! Did you go strictly by the instructions or just put it in & set the timing?? And how long did it take ?
Unless your ignition timing has already been optimized, you will be very satisfied with the results from installing one of Lars' SVE KwikCurve kits.
It is possible to optimize your ignition curve on your own without this pre-assembled kit. Just be ready to spend lot's of time in gathering, matching, and machining your own parts. The do-it-yourself approach will probably cost a lot more time and money for most people. Not to mention the added bonus of the excellent tech support provided by Lars!
My weight have rust on them and I think my vacuum advance is not doing the job. I'm hoping to get to checking this weekend or next. This kit sounds like it may be just what the Dr ordered for me too.
I'm repeating myself here (about the 14th time!) but I'll say it again. A Lars recurve kit gave me the best bang for the buck by far of ANY of the Mods I have done to my '76. And as you can see by my sig., I have done a few.....
I can't say how much increase for sure. But I got a nice unexpected chirp during a 1-2 shift the other day. And low-end torque and smoothness seems much better, which is important because of the OD tranny.
Definitely running much stronger now! Best bang for the buck.
