Re: VBP Spreader Bar/Fan Setup (paul79)
Paul there are two set-ups available. One has pre-welded mounting tabs and the other one doesn't.
VBP "Special Heavy Duty Spreader Bar is designed to strengthen and stabilize front-end control arm towers. Kits are available with or without mounting tabs welded in place. small blocks, weld on tabs after positioning to clear water pump pulley. Welding on vehicle not required. Cannot be used on big block cars with engine driven fan.
42223 Pre-Welded for cars without engine fan $69.95
42222 Un-welded for cars with engine driven fan$69.95"
Kind of confusing about the welding need. I think I will get the un-welded version so I can place the tabs where I need them. JIM
I was wondering about this as well. Maybe VBP will chime in to clarify. If anybody out there has one of these installed I would like to see some pics of the mounting. Thanks.
Thanks Jim. Nice looking product and should help prevent front-end frame flex/cracking as we saw in a recent thread. I just cannot see how it gets across the front of the engine without the stock fan being in the way. Hopefully the vendor will comment. I will buy one if it is a feasible install.
It will help strengthen the front chassis of your Corvette. Merlin had once posted pics of "good" used C3 frames that about all had cracks in them from street driving . These were mostly likely everyday C3 that had strarted to fall apart from being driven :nonod: . Check your own frames for cracks around the shock tower & steering component areas.
The spreaderbar will help to eliminate the excessive flex that occurs. On my own car, after installing the spreaderbar & taking it in for an alignment, the shop was able to remove most of the many shims that were in the upper arms afterwards ;) .
It is cheap insurance for front frame flex and cracking as seen in this thread. The factory welds can be reinforced or the bar can prevent the cracking before it occurs. I tend to agree that normal driving may not induce the cracking. But you never know. http://forums.corvetteforum.com/zerothread?id=522886
