Speedometer Update!
Here is the latest on my Speedometer not working my 4-speed car.
I have posted before that I had an issue with my speedometer not working. This happen last year. The first issue was the cable broke which was caused by rubbing against the exhaust pipe. I replaced the cable and it still didn’t work. Next I replaced the gear in the transmission. This didn’t fix the problem either. Well, I was thinking this is a bummer, because I knew the next step was tranny removal. Being toward the end of the season in Ohio, I put the car in storage with plans to fix before this season. FYI, my car is a 69 BB 427, 4 speed with only 51000 miles, what upset me is that there is nothing really wrong with the transmission and/or clutch and that I will need to remove it to fix the plastic worm speedometer gear on the shaft.
Well, last night it was time to fix this problem. I had asked a friend to help with this task. His day job is rebuilding trannys (at a local Aamco), so this was an easy task for him. My friend was thinking we could get the tailhouse extension off and work from there. Well, that wasn’t the case. After 45 minutes the tranny was ready to come out, but we messed around for another 30 minutes trying to the tranny out without removing the shifter. Once the shifter was out, the tranny was easy to remove. By the way, we left the clutch and bell-housing intact and didn’t remove the exhaust.
The transmission is out and we removed the rear extension housing and the problem was revealed. The darn plastic speedometer gear clip came off and the worm gear slide forward on the shaft. We pick the clip up in the casing and slide the worm gear back into place and the tranny is ready to go back into the car.
My friend is stopping back over Friday night to re-install the transmission. In the mean time, I am cleaning it up and painting some brackets.
