Help,I need to find a solution to the hot running engine 200-215 degrees with AC on)),The radiator is good,New engine and of course water pump,The fan shroud is not in the best of shape,I am considering an electric fan,Can I get rid of the fan that it has now?Will I need a fan shroud with an electric fan? What kind of fan should I buy? Thanks for all the advice that you guys have given me in the past. :crazy:
I would definately keep your fan shroud whether or not you add electric fans. The first thing I would check though is your timing. If it's way off it can cause a ton of heat. People have had their headers turn flame red with bad timing. I'm speaking from experience.
First you didn't mention your thermostat temp. If it's a 195 you're OK. If it's a 180 you're still at the high end of being OK. Either way run a 180, I believe a 160 is too cold and will hamper good clean cumbustion and lower fuel mileage. Other things to check and do: 1) Make sure all the foam seals around the radiator are in and sealing. What you want is that when the hood is closed the only place the air coming through the grilles can go is through the radiator. Not around the sides or over the top. The seal between the hood and radiator core support is very important. 2) Make sure your front chin spoiler is in good shape and in one piece. What this spoiler does is deflect a portion of the air, trying to go under the car, off to the side. This creates a slight low pressure area under the car which allows air that has gone through the radiator to travel past the engine and down to fill this low pressure area. 3) Try a Red Line product called Water Wetter. This product increases the coolant's efficency to transfer heat in both absorbtion of heat from the engine and release of heat to the radiator core. One bottle is enough and should be added to the radiator instead of the overflow tank. 4) Last but not least check your water pump belt. Better yet if you can't remember the last time you changed it do it now and check the tension after 500 miles.
Good luck and keep your cool!
Fan shroud;
Make sure air is pulled through radiator not through air leaks. Make sure all air leaks are blocked, place a light under a the radiator and look at it frome under hood, places where you see light air can get in. Might want to take fan off for better view.
You can use pipe insulation, the stuff at the home improvement store [round with a hole through it] cut it to fit and put in the gaps
Fan;
make sure it's inside of shroud so it can pull air better
Coolant;
Probably doesn't freeze where you are or at least not durning summer, flush radiator then add RedLine Water Wetter couple containers and distilled water.
Also if you have the stock fan make sure the clutch is working.
Might sound crazy but this may be all you need.
The best solution would be to get a big raditor and electric fans, but you might not have too.
:withstupid: With a 180 thermostat you should be running between 180 to 200 without the air and around 200 to 215 with the air on during a hot day. You can tweak things to make sure you're getting maximum cooling like the seals around the shroud and the front spoiler but I don't think you'll see an improvement. If you run a 160 thermostat you may find that you still run at the same temperatures with the air on but in the winter you'll barely break 160 and that's a little too cool. I ran a 160 for a while and found that when I went to a 180 the performance of the engine improved. Good luck.
