Starter electrical advice needed- please help?
The last couple of nights I've been busy in the garage. Now I'm getting to the tough electrical part. I am installing a gear reduction starter. Unfortunately this starter has only two posts for electrical connections where my stock starter has 4!
I identified the following:
+12 Volt (massive, red)
Key Start Signal (Small, red)
Ground (Black)
And then there is another red one. The schematic says something about an ignition wire (yellow).
I checked on the old starter. The post that this ominous wire was connected to get's connected to the BIG battery cable when I give power to the solenoid. Is this the wire that 'circumvents' the ballast resistor on the ignition for full spark when starting?
If it is, what do I do with it? I don't think I need it since I'm running a Pertronix, but.....
And if this is not it- what might it be?
Thanks guys!
Stefan

The ground wire seems to be grounding something else (the blower motor or sthg like that I guess) so I'll connect it to a bolt. That ignition wire however has me concerned. It's definitely connected to the coil somehow. Anybody know what this is good for?
It looks like it gets connected to the BIG pole (+12V from battery) when the solenoid is engaged.
Every suggestion is appreciated. Somebody ran into this before maybe?
THANKS!
Stefan
You want to supply your Pertronix with a full 12V at all times (cranking and running), so you should have already supplied the Pertonix unit with a good power source when you installed it. Some people install it using the + wire from the coil, but that will give the Pertronix less than 12V due to the inline resistor (ballast or "resistor wire" depending on year) used by the standard ignition system.
Now that I thought it myself and had two confirmations, I am going to believe it :jester
I have not supplied the Pertronix with solid +12 Ignition. Where would be a good (and close of course :D) source for +12V (ignition) that I can supply to the coil?
Thanks!
Stefan
