Has anyone ever heard anything about the Mr. Gasket inline 4 speed shifter. It does away with the H pattern of a standard shifter and uses the inline shifter pattern to help cut back on missed shifts. It's for a manual 4 speed transmission.
I would GREATLY appreciate any help...as I cannot find any information about them other than they are for racing.
Re: Mr. Gasket Inline 4 Speed Shifter??? (bence13_33)
I don't know about the specific shifter you are talking about but I can give you some insight. Over the years there have been a lot of companies that have marketed narrow gate shifters that supposedly helped you shift quicker. It sounds like the shifter you are talking about fits this category. It's probably not really a straight line shifter but more like a shifter that has a very narrow gate between the 2nd to 3rd shift throw to enhance power-shifting. All I can say is that there have been many companies over the years but Hurst is still considered the standard by which 4 speed shifters are measured (at least in regard to older model trannys). Reliability and longevity should be your primary consideration in shifter selection.
Re: Mr. Gasket Inline 4 Speed Shifter??? (bence13_33)
No they are true straight line shifters. You will have a pull lever (similar to the corvette t-handle) that you have to pull up to get the trans into first or second. When you go from second to third the handle will drop down and you will be in third and fourth. When you down shift you have to go to nuetral and pull the lever back up to get into second or first. We don't even want to talk about reverse. :banghead:
They are great for the drag strip but get really old, really fast on the street. I have install a couple of them for street rodders and then they had me take them back out after they got tired of them.

Thank you for the great clarification! I was almost 100% certain that it was indeed an inline shifter for a 4 speed manual tranny. I may decide to go this route. Can you tell me if I will run into issues with the stock console?
This seems like a really neat shifter that may help to improve my shifting time down the drag strip. My car doesn't see the road too often anymore and is probably about 75% strip and 25% street now.

:iagree:
I ran one on the street on a Chevelle many years ago.....works great on the track, pull up on the little handle in front of the shifter, push the lever forward into 1st. Pull straight back for 2nd...then push straight forward for 3rd...then pull staight back again for 4th. No need to worry about the H-gate. BUT....on the street they are a pain....very difficult to pull "low" handle and shift from third to second smoothly. They are designed to up-shift in a hurry...but not downshifting.

I would say you will definately have problems with the stock console. The way the seperate reverse lever is mounted I doubt that it would fit in a stock console without a lot of cutting.
They are high quality shifters and it should work very well behind your "stock 180 HP"
But I will warn you again, they are made for the track. They work great upshifting but are a pain downshifting. They also make a good theft deterent because no one will be able to figure out how to get it into reverse but you. And hopefully you will remember how after a couple of brews. :lolg:

Thanks again for the information. I like the theft deterent idea (might help keep the girlfriend from wanting to drive it) . I may decide to purchase another center console entirely and cut it up. So just out of curiousity how do you get the shifter into reverse? My guess is that you put the shifter in neutral and pull that lever located behind the shifter?
Re: Mr. Gasket Inline 4 Speed Shifter??? (bence13_33)
On the ones I installed you had to put it in nuetral, pull up on the 1st/2nd gear gate lever and with your other hand then push the reverse lever into gear.
Well there goes the end of the reverse to first gear drops! :lolg: Just kidding.

I currently have one in my 67 Camaro made by Hurst called the ramrod. It requires some floor/tunnel modifications. Works extremely well. They no longer make them but I see them on Ebay from time to time. Will not fit stock console. :steering:
