mine runs at 190 around town in FL heat. Climbs to 220 on highway (weird), but has never overheated.

220 with the air on is normal for a vette in warm weather.

:iagree: :iagree: :iagree: :iagree:

These babies run hot. Don't worry about it. The auxiliary electric fan installed in some '79s isn't even set to come on until 238 degrees!

Ok, good, so I am not the only one who's car gets hotter on the highway. These are the goofiest cars I've ever seen when it comes to cooling:crazy: . I thought the increased airflow would cool then down... every other car I ever had did.

An OD tranny will knock 20 degrees off your highway operating temps! The engine is working a LOT less harder because it will only turn 2/3 the rpms it was previously!!! :yesnod:

My '78 has a 190 degree thermostat so it stays between 190 and 220 on a hot day in Chicago. Beware though.....if you stop or are in heavy stop n' go traffic the temp will rise quickly. On one of our club outings we stopped for one of our cars having problems and I left my air running on a 95+ day. I came back to my car 5 minutes later and it was up to about 250! The other club members laughed and said I should no better than ot leave the air running on a standing still Corvette. Even the C5s will heat up to the danger zone if the air is left on will standing still. With two littel grills and a radiator tipped on an angle, there isn't much air blowing in. :mad :mad :mad

When you get over 45 the clutch fan free wheels and you start losing the air draw even at 60mph. The air dam or chin lip is absolutely needed for highways. A basic cooling problem of C3's is there is no place for the hot air to go, not enough draw. This is why the alum radiator and puller fans works so well on these beasts. A friend that races these things cuts louvers in the underside panels that cover the heater core and the charcol cannister which he says acts as a vent to draw the hot air out of the compartment. Have not tried it, but why not.
