I was wondering if someone could help me figure out what is wrong with the power windows in my 72. There is power that goes up to the relay. You can jump the motors from the wires that unplug from the switch by inserting a wire in two of the holes and connecting the circuit to a battery. The switches test good. I replaced the relay, NO LUCK. Why don't they work????? ANY IDEAS WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED!!!!
I dont understand exactly what you did with the switch. Did you jumper the switch?, and did the windows work when you did it? I'll bet it will end up being a bad ground

Yes I did jump the switch. Yes the motors worked and the windows cranked when I did jump the switch. Now how do I find where the bad ground could be?
Thanks agian,

Your problem sounds similar to one I had a couple years ago. I tested and tried everything and could not figure out what the problem was. My problem was also complicated by the window working sometimes. Try this...
CHECK YOUR CONTINUITY AT THE MOTOR AND THE RELAY. :D
The door opened and closed several thousand times and my wires in the door jamb broke, became frayed and caused it to work sometimes and sometimes not. Check the continuity... Could save you a lot of time and work... Trust me, I know.
I had lost use to both power locks and power windows on BOTH doors on my 89' GMC. It was the same problem, over the years of opening the and closing the doors, the "return"/ "ground was common to all the circuits. Everything workd OK when the door was Closed, but when I opened the ddriver door, it would break the connection.
However, if you removed the connector from the switch, jumpered the connector (simulating the switch function), and the window worked, then the switch would be bad.
I am actually only putting one wire into the back of the switch, and connecting that wire to the battery. I have checked the fuse. Does anyone know where the switch wires and the relay wires should meet?

My '72 service manual has a diagram on page 12-94. It's a separate one on the power windows amd rear defogger after the regular diagrams. It shows the right switch power wire as 12 brn and the left as 12 r/w. these go to splice point and come out as one wire 12 r/w that continues on to relay (shown as circuit 70) Relay is grounded with 12 b. Battery comes from 12 orn/b thru dash panel from power window circuit breaker, which has 10 r to horn relay. Third prone on power window relay is 12 p/b going to fuse panel and the 12 p/b to circuit 139 tap.
With a 12V test light or voltmeter check for 12V on the orange-black wire of the power window relay. It goes back to the battery through the circuit breaker, so it should have power all the time. If not then the problem is in the circuit breaker or the wiring from the circuit breaker to the relay.
You should have 12V on the pink-black wire at relay when the ignition is on. If not check ignition fuse and wiring
If you have 12V on both the orange-black and the pink-black wires at the relay when the ignition is on, but not on the red-white wire, then it is a bad power window relay or it is not grounded. Jumper a test ground to the relay to test before replacing.
From here it easy to test the switches and wiring going to the motors. If 12V gets through the switch to the motor connectors, then it is bad power window motor or a bad ground to the power window motor.
Thankyou everyone for your help!!!!! I am not quite there yet, but getting closer. Any other ideas??? Anyone got that color coded wire diagram laying around and want to make me a copy???? :yesnod:
