I was attempting to remove one of the heads on my motor when two of the bolts got their tops "rounded off" by the socket not being on straight I guess. Perhaps I was using the wrong style socket or, they may have already been a bit rounded before I touched them (they were, of course, really tight).
In any case I need to get those bolts out of there in order to remove the head.
Any one ever had to do this before? What do you do?
Mark,
Get to Sears and get their 'bolt out' set.. It is kind of fluted on the inside and bites into the rounded off head.. The have impact and wrench style. saved my butt a couple of times :smash: :hurray:
Thanks to all that replied. The tight confines may prevent using vice grips or anything wider than a socket. I can't get back to work on it for a few days. If successful, I'll report what worked.
"OLD SCHOOL", MANY THANKS FOR THE TIP ABOUT THE SEARS/CRAFTSMAN PRODUCT CALLED "BOLT OUT". I BOUGHT THEM TODAY AND THOSE SUCKERS CAME OUT WITH NO PROBLEM. WHAT A HUGE RELIEF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I just used the Sears 'bolt out' set this weekend on a 9/16 bolt head that I had stripped round last weekend. After letting WD-40 set for a few days, I taped the Sears bit onto the bolt with a hammer, attached a socket wrench, held my breath, pulled on the breaker bar and that sucka came right out!!!!
I highly recommend this set to anyone pulling bolts out of an old vet!
