Starter question
Every once in awhile I get a loud grinding noise when I start the car. There is no pattern to it. It just happens every now and then when I go to start it. Does this mean that the starter is starting to go or is there something more serious going on? The engine is a stock L48 with an automatic.

Well it could be a mix and match of several problems. Some may require more work than others.
1. The starters Bendix could be worn out --> Change the starter
2. The Bendix support bushing is severally worn --> Change the starter
3. The flywheel/flexplate could have a bad spot on the ring gear -->will need to change the flywheel/flexplate, which means removal of the trans.
Or it could be a combination of all 3. So what you should do is take off the the flexplate inspection cover and rotate the engine over and see if there is any damage to the ring gear, if so you found the problem, but if not replace the starter, or if you have a lot of miles on that starter replace it at the same time.
