Alright guys, i finally got everything hooked up, checked, and ready to go...i got interior lights, i got the stereo working...so i go to turn the motor over..(ignition coil is not plugged, in order to prime) and all i hear is some type of relay....the relay sounds like its coming from the near the interior, however, the motor won't even turnover...i know it has to be something with the starter..can anyone tell me what wires goes to what, how you hooked up your starter, or anytype of diagram or suggestions?? thanks. Herb
do you have the ground hooked up tp the back o fthe alternator??????also are the bolts on the terminals on starter tight??????there might be a short in the stater from the get go too,if you have lights and the stereo working there is nothing hooked up wrong on the starter but it does sound like the solenoid on the starter big time i hope that helps you,i do this type of thing all week at work usually it turns out to be the starter>>>>
There is a couple of wires you do not need to crank the starter over.
You need:
One BIG (3/8" diameter or so) coming with +12V from the battery. This should be hooked up to the BIG terminal on the solenoid
One little red one going to one of the small terminals on the solenoid. That is your key-start +12V. What happens is:
When you turn the key the little red one gets 12V kicking the solenoid. Thta makes a contact for the BIG red one giving power to the motor.
Then there's a small black one that goes to the motor and grounds I believe the blower fan.
One 10gauge red one going from the BIG old termianl on the solenoid to the horn relay for main electric supply. That is where your fusible link is. That may be burnt.
Then there is a small yellow one going from the other small terminal on the solenoid to the ignition coil. That will give you full 12V on the ignition for starting.
Hope this helps. And remember that is from memory the condition on a 69BB....
i got everything connected right...nothing burned up, nothing wrong with fusable link....i just got no power to the solenoid. i checked the wire, and its just not hot. ??? what could this be? i got power to everything else...

Re: ZZ4 won't turnover! HELP! (BSeery)
1) Check neutral safety switch and wires
2) Check lead to the solenoid on the starter
3) Check Wire attached to lead on solenoid on starter
4) If no juice on wire to solenoid backtrack said wire until you find the short
5) If juice in wire and looks like good voltage solenoid is blown
Been through this TOOO many times with other cars.. it's a royal PITA
Do you have all the wires disconnected to the coil or just to the distributor? If I remember correctly nothing works if you don't have the pos. and neg. connected to the coil.
everything is connected properly..i've checked and checked...i'm going to get a new battery.....but i still had no juice to the solenoid with the old battery, however, everything else electrical worked. hmmmm?? still got to troubleshoot. :mad
My 2 cents... seatbelt interlock relay system. 74s and some 75s were shipped with an irritating system designed to prevent the car from starting if the driver isn't wearing a seatbelt. If the relay you hear clicking is near the radio... that could be the issue.
Have you wired in an electric choke (or other electronic accessory) in the engine compartment?
Over by the heater assembly, on the firewall of the engine compartment, should be a box with a pushbutton on it. This is a bypass for the SIR system. If I remember correctly it should work like a reset button, push then try to start. Shown is a pic of the connector the little reset box should plug into. If anything has been plugged in here (what I did and it caused the EXACT trouble you describe) unplug it.
cook, that was a good thought, but i don't have anything like that on my car. theres nothing wrong with the solenoid or fuses...i got the car to turn over by shorting the starter with a screwdriver...i just got no power to the solenoid. i'm going try and to do a few more things, and see what happens.
