Default Timing Question Help

Can too much timing cause my engine to run hotter while idling? If so will dropping it back a few degrees help? Last time I remeber checking the idle speed is around 600rpm and the base timing is around 8 degrees. Compcam XE262. Let me know if there is anything else you need to know. Thanks.

In general increased timing reduces engine temp.

Advancing the timing lowers engine temp. 8 degrees isn't much timing.... how much total are you getting with only 8 initial? Unless your advance stop bushing is missing, there's no way you're going to get enough total with only 8 at idle. Set it up for 36 total and see where your initial ends up. Hopefully, you'll get about 12-15 at idle with 36 total, and this will drop your temp pretty significantly. But you need to check and set that total and tune it from there...

If your getting hot at idle make sure enough air is moving across the radiator. Fan shroud okay? If you have a clutch fan check the clutch. If it is slipping the fan may not be turning fast enough to move enough air. Also make sure the radiator is not blocked with debris and such.

Good luck

Brand new radiator with only around 100 miles. I just put it on last week. It has a Spal 16 inch fan that pulls a ton of air. I just wasn`t expecting it to run up near 200. Its kind of scary seeing it get that high when you just finished a new engine.

Three things of note. I had a new GM base model 350 crate engine installed in my 72 last year. It ran hotter than the old engine right away, with all else being carryover from the old engine.

Next, if you installed a new radiator, did you remember to put the spring back into the lower radiator hose? Flow suction can collapse that hose restricting flow.

3rd, my Spal fans are set to kick on at 195. Your fan may have the same type sensor.
