:mad Failed HC's in New Jersey again. I went from 1384 to 400, but I still need to get to 300.
 I checked all my vaccuum hoses, spark plug wires look good, changed the oil, etc. I used Fuelon in the gas. When I first got on the computer the HC's were between 240 and 340. As the car idled longer they got higher. Could I be passing oil? Is my engine running to rich/lean? Are idle RPM's to low/high. Engine idles at 750 - 800 in park. :banghead:
All and any help will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

High hydrocarbons means your timing is too far advanced for the test. Retard the timing about 4 degrees, set your idle mixtures up for a 50-rpm lean drop, and then run the idle speed right up against the upper limit for idle rpm allowed by the test. After you've passed, re-set your timing correctly for 36 total and re-tune the car from there.
I had a mechanic once show me for an old rusty but trusty 78 Camaro on a emmissions sniffer machine what happens when you disconnect the vacuum advance to the distributor. Your emmissions drop off the chart. Both needles dropped like flies.
He said " Do you want to fix it or do you just want to pass the test?"
You probably know what I did and I did it while I was in line for the test and I passed the 'ol El Paso.
MN has dropped all emmissions testing stating that during the years it was enforced, there were no noticable changes in air quality over time. The program funding was dropped.
I still think though that there should be a fix it ticket issued to the gross blue smokers. You ever notice this is usually a 4 popper chrylser product throwing the blues.
