There was just a bunch on this. The main thing, is you don't want a vacuum leak. Well, that and a fuel leak. Find the fuel leak first.
Just the same, if you plugged the hose going to the carb, but left the hose coming from the evaporator, you'll also smell fuel. The whole purpose of the evaporator is to take the vapors from your tank, filter them, and direct them back into your carb. The evaporator is only a problem if it's leaking. That's going to cause idle issues, among other things.
The proper thing to do, is make sure all the vacuum lines are good. Run one back into your carb. Make sure your evaporator cannister filter is fresh (they're cheap). Then it will be doing it's job, your vacuum should be fine, and all will be well with the world.
