I'm thinking of getting a rebuilt diff for my car and I'm considereing doing the work myself. I don't have a lot of the tools needed to rebuild it myself and it looks like the cost of buying the tools outweighs the rebuild cost.
So, is a differential unit replacement a major pain? Any thoughts or insight would be appreciated. :steering:
I paid for the rebuild but performed the removal/installation myself. C3SharkTank posted a link to his diff replacement. It is a 1981 so a bit different but the suspension/driveline mounting instr's are the same. Check with him if interested in reading.
I see you've got Van Steel T/A's. If you replaced them yourself, then you'll find that replacing the differential is not much more work. After you get all the drive unhooked, I think it's easier to drop the differential out with the crossmember than it is to take out the unit by itself, like th emanuals say to do it.
actually I had Van Steel do the TA's. I didn't ever realize they were bad ( never really checked them). I took the car to them to do the front end kit. Glad I did too, because I would've been mad if I had spent all that time on the front end and had the car still drive bad and change lanes on me. :banghead:
THe T/A's don't look like anything I couldn't handle though (I say that until I actually have to do it :skep: )
Go for it! Just make sure you get a dial indicator with magnetic stand,s ( I had a friend who had one),some extra shims. There"s also help here on the forum, you"ll feel real good about it when you"re done also. It looks scarry under there at first, but with a manual the carrier removal is an easy job,no #$it!
