I just purchased a set og KB pistons and it gives a detailed description as to what the ring gap should be. However, i don't have a clue how physically do this. I understand to what size i need, just don't know how to measure it or set it :(
help please
Does anybody have any recommendations on what type of rings to get. It will be for a 383 sbc 400hp daily driver with 9.7:1 compression.
You have to file them if you have file to fit rings. If you have pregapped rings they go in as they are (the gap will be wider than "ideal")
Case file fit:
Is the block bored over?
If not, press the ring down all the way to the bottom part of the bore (least worn) w/ a ring less piston (top down) so it sits nice and square. Then w/ a feeler gauge measure the gap.
If the engine is bored you can use the top of the bore, just press the ring down w/ a pistons and use a 2nd ring in the pistons to act as a "stop"on the deck, again so it's nice and square.
There's very good video out called "rebuilding your engine", Eastwoods sells it along with another on hot rodding a SBC. It's worth it to review and goes over setting ring gap.
