I just put a mini high tork starter on, but it only has 2 wires, the factory has 3 wires. The place i bought it from says to hook it up to the center wire which is always hot, coming from the battery. do I hook it there, or do I just snip the end off. I had it hooked up to the hot sideof the solenoid and the coil was hot on both sides, Most likely fried my points, that is why i am not getting any fire.
So where does the 3rd wire have to go? Does it have to be hooked up.
Old starters have three wires. The large battery post. The starter signal(purple). and The ignition resistor bypass(pink). The bypass circuit is the one that you will have to leave off. Just tape up the wire end just in case you want to change it back. You will have to depend on the coil to have enough power to it to start the engine without the added voltage of the bypass.
I replaced points, condenser, and coil. I still do not get any fire. I had fire before i switched starters. The old starter just dragged really bad. When I was shimming and testing it fired a couple times, now nothing. :(
It got to be a simple solution.
You didnt say what year, so I dont know exactly what we are dealing with here, but you should go to the positive post on the coil and check that it gets fire when the key is turned to the on position. Originally there should have been two wires there. One from the switch and one from the starter. If there is no fire there, you will need to check that wire at the ignition switch.
the car is a 69, it has fire on the pos side of coil. and fire on neg side when cranking on engine. No it is not hot when the key is off. but it is hot when key is on.

I had the same problem when I hooked my new starter and I believe you have to have the third wire attached for it to run after it fires. I could get it to fire then as soon as I left off the key it died. I don't remember all the details but I remember leaving a wire off when I intalled it and decided to try connecting it after it wouldn't stay running. Haven't had a problem since.
