Guys, I have a 74 vette that I decided to hot rod a little. I built a 383 stroker, demon carb (750) AFR CNC ported & polished heads, anyway about 6K later its making 526 HP and 532 FT\Pounds. Im worried about my rear axle and was wondering what people do for vettes with high HP motors? I dont think simply changing the axles is going to solve my problems. The tranny is a T350, built pretty solid. This baby should scream well into the low 11"s as long as I dont leave the rear end at the line.
Well - there's no such thing as too much power.. but there can be too much traction... I wouldn't want to use sticky tires with that much power and a stock rear end.. I have less HP and I already broke one posi case, rear wheel bearings and rears spring because of racing...
Here are some possible upgrades that you can do so that you have to worry less:
1) change your posi case to a stronger one...
The Auburn unit is a little stronger and doesn't crack as frequent as GM units
2) use solid spicer u-joints on the halfshaft and driveshaft
3) check and replace your rear wheel bearings if necessary..
4) if you have a old leaf spring - replace it with a new one.. (I snapped my spring)
Can the rear end, (spider gears, ring) be beefed up to handle this amount of HP? Can the entire rearend assembly be changed out? I see guys at the track with vettes on TV so Im sure there is something I can do. What HP are you pushing to break your axle?
Thats a good question, I just assumed it was a T350, perhaps I need to take a closer look. So, the 74's came with the 400 huh?
:yesnod: Yep have you built the tranny any...may wanna consider a god shif improver kit(transgo) a cooler and a higher stall convertor to help with launches
