Default Carb gasket question

I'm running a Holley Street Dominator dual plane aluminum intake and a Q-Jet. I have a montrous vacuum leak. I've tried a couple of different types of carb gaskets and some make the problem better, and some make it worse, but none fix it. What kind of gasket should I be running? Also, I have an Edelbrock Performer that I'm thinking about putting on. Will the gasket setup be the same for it also?

BTW-- The carb was originally on a '79 GMC Truck.

TIA,

I actually would suspect the intake manifold gasket not the carb gasket. That is unless you have a severly warped carb base. When you use aluminum intakes you need to NOT use the metal impregnated factory type intake gasket. Use instead the paper Mr.Gasket or equivilent. Also do not use the rubber end seals. Instead a good RTV on each end will be better. The rubber tends to slip out. I also use a thin layer of RTV on both sides of the gaskets and wait 24 hours before fireing the engine.

I used Fel-Pro gaskets for the intake and black RTV for the ends and waited a couple of weeks before firing the engine. I feel pretty confident that the intake isn't the problem, but I'm thinking about redoing it just to be sure. Does the paper gasket need to have the 4 holes in it, or just the one large opening?

Thanks,

a q jet will bolt right up to a performer intake with no mods. you need a special gasket to use a square bore holley on a performer intake. :chevy

The gasket does not need to have the 4 holes, one large hole is fine. You also don't need to wait weeks before fireing the engine. overnight is fine.
I use a little silicon grease or vacuum grease on the intake gasket to it is reusable time and again.
You sound like you have a real vacuum leak. More then can be comming from the gasket unless your carb base has been overtightened and warped the ears down.
On a flat plate with the 8 x 11 piece of emery paper fastened down slide the carb back and forth checking for flatness and if there is a problem keep doing it until the base is flat.

Is the intake a squarebore or spreadbore. If squarebore you will need an adaptor because the carb is a spreadbore.
