I have a leak with the tranny on my car – It appears to be coming from the front corner bolt of the pan towards the engine close to the bell housing, I suspect that it is the gasket, but the bolt for the bell housing close to the pan bolt seems wet to ? Is their a chance it could be something else ? I checked the tranny lines and the dipstick and this is all fine. Any ideas would be appreciated – Thanks
Could be oil leak from the engine (Valve covers, Rear main seal) blown back to the tran OR the tran's front seal leak! Clean the engine and tran at the self-carwash then look for the leak.
Tranny leaks are a major pain. Finding them is a pain -- fluid tens to run along the lip the pan bolts to towards the front. And if it turns out the be the front seal, it could end up being a major pain in your wallet!
So the first thing you should do is remove the torque converter dust cover. If there's fluid on the inside of the cover, it's likely your front seal has gone bad. If not, wipe everything clean and wrap paper towels around the speedo cable outlet, the shift rod, etc. See which one(s) get wet. That'll give you an idea of what you're facing...
I will clean the under side and have a closer look, is there anything special I should do when removing the torque converter cover, I see that there are a few bolts and it appears straight forward enough - I suspect that the leak could be coming from the converter cover - If it is leaking from here it could be the front seal, what would be involved in fixing this ?
The front pump o-ring or seal might be the culprit
do as they suggest and wipe it down after removing cover and check it after it sits overnight
If o-ring is leaking it is an indication that the transmission may be due for a paper/rubber/cork gasket set, i.e. time for a overhaul and chances are you'll need clutches as well if it's been a while since it has been overhauled. If it's a front seal..you can do it....o-ring....depends on your tools and skill level. The reason to overhaul if pump o-ring culprit is that most likely other leaks will develop soon and you may encounter slow engagement in cold weather or slipping clutches if the rubber lipseals inside are getting hard too.....In my Opinion. good luck....maybe just a pan gasket over-torqued or loose. BTW...always put a cork gasket on pan with no sealer after straightening pan rail surface...let us know what it was
Thanks for the input- ON saturday I am going to get under the car, clean it up and try to narrow down the leak - It looks like the pan itself, but the front seal also got me thinking, so I thought I would prepare myself for the worse. :)
