Anyone ever use Dynamat sound damper/thermal barrier? If so, is it noticeably effective?
I just picked up about 50 square feet of their Dynamat Xtreme and the same amount of the Xtremeliner. This combination is supposed the be the most effective, but I just want to make sure it works before I start pulling the interior out and install it. I'm planning on putting a layer of each under the entire carpet, the interior firewall, the inside of the door panels and the inside of the t-tops. I'm looking to make the car more cozy, and reduce the noise/vibrations created by the road, engine, exhaust, fuel pump etc. As well as improve the efficiency of my heat and air. Supposedly the stuff is good at blocking radiant heat form the engine and undercar exhaust as well. Surprisingly, that hasn't really been a problem with the TT engine, even though everyone seemed to think it would be. I just want to bring the interior comfort level up to current OEM standards - in terms of noise reduction and comfort.
Well that stuff is supposed to be the best of the best. I'm sure it will make a huge difference. I did it in my car with a different material and it made the car soooo much more livable, and mine is a convertible. The only advice I would offer is to make it as thin as you can around the pedals, especially the gas pedal, and make sure you plug every hole you come across in the firewall. Oh yeah, it's a good time to run wiring for the stereo as well.
This one project turned my car from having the aura of a 30 year old beater to that of a modern day roadster.
I looked at Brown Bread also, as I've heard it is good too. But it seemed more difficult to install since it requires heat to apply/adhere it, and I was told that it smells like tar. That might be an exaggeration, but I wouldn't want that smell in my car. Since it is similar to roofing material in composition, it seemed reasonable, but I don't know first hand.
Anyway, according to Dynamic controls, the Dynamat Xtreme is more effective, so that's why I chose it. The problem I have is that my 2 electric fuel pumps are pretty noisy, and the Borla XR1 mufflers vibrate the rear package tray as just mentioned by Flynhi. I just wanted the most effect noise damping/deadener possible. When I'm just cruising around I don't want the interior of the car to sound like a muscle car, more like a new luxury car in terms of being noise and vibration free.
Of course the downside to it, besides the cost, is that it will probably add about 40-50 lbs to the car.
Doh, I should have thought about that. I looked over there, and lo and heold there are a couple of threads ongoing about it. I'll chalk it up to a newborn induced lack of sleep.
I'm using the same combination Xtreme, and xtreme liner. Right now I'm just doing the trunk area and in between my tubs. I know with the flat floor and tub work, when you would tap on anything you'd get the typical "metal" sound. With the extreme just laid down, it made a world of difference, just seemed to seal everything.
Applying the stuff couldn't be easier... sticks to almost anything, I'm using a small heat gun prior to putting it on, but would say it's not necessary... I'm gonna send you a pic of what the trunk area looks like.
I did the entire inside of my 69 in the Xtreme. Firewall, foot wells, trans tunnel, doors, under deck lid, cargo area, etc. I am told that two layers of xtreme will block virtually all resonance from outside. It made a big difference putting some in the back cargo area of my ZO6 too. The stereo was worthless until the Dynamat went in. I intend to do the entire inside of the Z in two layers. Should make it more like the inside of a Monte Carlo or Ford LTD noise wise, at least until I floor it!
I have searched for Xtreme on eBay and found it much, much less expensive than buying through Summitt and others.
I lined the complete interior of my Datsun 280ZX with the regular Dynamat. It made a hugh difference. When I put A flowmaster on it, I was getting terrible resonance and noise. The Dynamat knocked the noise down completely. Expensive, put worth it.
Thanks guys. I feel like such a jackass. I bought my Dynamat from Summit for $199 for the 36 sq ft Bulk Pack, which I thought was a good deal compared to the $250 suggested retail price, but I am finding it as low as $96 on eBay!
Does anyone know what the difference is between Dynamat part numbers 10455 and 20455 are? By the descriptions they are the same thing, but on eBay 10455 is going for $96 and Summit charged me $199 for 20455.
Actually, I initially bought 2 bulk packs, 72 square feet, and I'm thinking I'd like to get 2 more 36 sq ft bulk packs. this will enable me to do at least 2 layers, and 3 layers in certain places.
You seem to know about this stuff. Do you know what the difference is between 10455 and 20455 is? The eBay stores are selling 10455 for around $98 or so, while I just paid twice that for 20455 from Summit and according to the description, it's the same thing!
I bought the pre-cut dynamat for my 77 corvette. The 1968-1982 Roof Kit included 2 pieces for the "Sail Panel". I don't know what that is. Does anybody out there know.
you can buy dynomat 'hushmat in rolls 80 mils, on fleabay pretty cheaply. I did the inside of my C4 (firewall all the way to the back , inside storage compartments and the doors) when I put the new interior in it, for less than $100. Very quiet and the a/c worked better. You can buy it without the logo cheaper than with the logo for bout 25% less and its the same product, cut it to fit with cheap shears ot a razor knife. hope this helps

I appreciate that but I was refering specifically to the "Sail Panels". What are those?
amen brother amen, the only thing I can think that would be the sail panel might be what the C4's call the 'halo', could you describe their shape? someone else may know for sure. did a search its the area behind the seats as you go up to the roof, heres an example http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/03-Co...item19cdb3ec87
if you had shoulder belts, its the area where the upper mount bolts to
