A Fun Day At The Track!
I went over to PRP (Pittsburgh Raceway Park) on Sunday and decided to do some bracket racing. It was $30 ! I just wanted to see if my car was any faster  . Here's the timeslip from my first pass I was shifting at 6300RPMs :
1st Run:
Reaction Time: 1.016 (wasn't paying attention)
60': 1.967
330': 5.314
1/8: 8.070
MPH: 90.67
1000': 10.409
1/4: 12.345
MPH: 117.55
My highest MPH down the 1/4 at the last test and tune was 115.91 . So as you can see the extra 10 degrees total timing advance really helped the motor. I'm not going to list my 2nd pass because it wasn't anything special I had problems launching and ran 12.401 @ 116.94MPH . That was the end of the two time trials then started the eliminations. I figured well I'll get one more race and I'll be eliminated. I dialed in a 12.20 because my car is so inconsistant I wanted to play it safe.
Here's the timeslip from the 1st round of eliminations. I raced a 1st gen Camaro.
Camaro / Me
Dial: 14.50 / 12.20
R/T: .684 / .517
60': 2.076 / 1.991
330': 6.023 / 5.315
1/8: 9.281 / 8.072
MPH: 74.91 / 90.50
1000': 12.119 / 10.425
1/4: 14.560 / 12.369
MPH: 87.44 / 116.61
I won by .0588! I finally chased him down at the end of the track and beat him to the finish line (I love my cars top end). Numerically speaking he's the better bracket racer as far as dial in is concerned. The only thing that saved me was my great light. So I was moving on to the 2nd round :) .
Here's the timeslip from the second round. I raced an 80's Trans Am. Here's the timeslip:
Me / Trans Am
Dial: 12.20 / 14.30
R/T: .589 / 1.143
60': 1.958 / 2.048
330': 5.288 / 5.917
1/8: 8.037 / 9.134
MPH: 90.71 / 76.50
1000': 10.376 / 11.939
1/4: 12.322 / 14.329
MPH: 116.80 / 94.13
I beat the Trans Am to the finish line by .4616. Another decent light saved my butt. So I was headed into the 3rd round. I dialed my car back up to a 12.30 because that's what I was running all day. The Cobra that I was about to race did this a lot, I always see him at the track. I got to race a newer white Cobra Mustang with a supercharger. Here's the timeslip from the 3rd run:
Me / Mustang
Dial: 12.30 / 12.00
R/T: .701 / .750
60': 1.848 / 1.671
330': 5.161 / 5.017
1/8: 7.89 / 7.744
MPH: 91.13 / 91.37
1000: 10.220 / 10.084
1/4: 12.149 / 12.012
MPH: 117.72 / 117.52
So I lost. I knew as soon as I hit 3rd gear that I was going to run under and that it felt like a strong run. I thought very briefly about letting off the gas to slow my time down a little...but that's not me. I kept in it and ran it out to a 12.149 @ 117.72MPH and went home a VERY happy camper! I shifted at 6300RPMs all day long and didn't experiment with any higher or low shift points. All in all my car didn't throw a belt all day, never gave me any problems, ran faster than it ever has and I didn't break anything. Thus a great day of drag racing!
*EDIT*
My buddy Tim Dotts was at the track. He used to have an 1980 Camaro with a 454 built similar to mine. He ran 11.66 @ 115MPH. He said he was amazed at how well my car MPHs. He said mid 11's should be in my future.

Very, very solid numbers, Shane, and your driving gets better almost every pass.
Glad you had fun!! That's the most important thing. And low-12s at 117mph is nothing shabby at all!! :D

thanks for the report.
i'm also running 29-31 total, so i was wondering how much this might cost me in the 1/4.
Looks like a 1/4 second. Since i'm not racing, i'm willing to lose that in order to run 87 octane.

Yes, they are respectable numbers but I know the car has some 11 second passes in it. Right now I think the main problem is the guy that's driving the car :D .
Matt:
I'm not sure how much you are missing out on. However, just by changing my total timing advance from 29 degrees to 38-39 degrees I picked up 1.81MPH....that's A LOT of MPH in the 1/4.

Look on the bright side though, If I were driving, your Vette would be firmly planted in the 15's!

Congrats Shane. Based on the MPH of your run vs. the Cobra, I'm guessing you could get into 11's no problem if you can get your 60ft. down a bit more. I know, MUCH easier said than done. Congrats on the best ET yet.

That guy was driving a pretty beat up Trans Am. It had a Vince's Performance sticker in the rear window. The guy was wearing a Vince's Automative Performance shirt (so I'm assuming that he was Vince). But had a dial in time of 14.30. I don't think I'd be advertising performance for my shop if my personal car was running 14.30s.
I'm always leary of cars that look kinda beat up on the outside. If it's beat up on the outside you can guess where all the money is at :) . Those kind of cars scare me.

Awesome Job Shane. Looks like you might be going into competion a bit more huh?
Looks like you went faster cause you started hooking better! was your burnout a little longer on the last run?
will you be doing that type of racing again? did you like it more then Test and Tune? The adrelalin (sp?) can make it alot more fun when you know you have to go home if you loose :)

It's fun chasing down guys....that's all. I don't like the idea that a 4 cylinder 4 door automatic equipped car running 19.8s in the 1/4 has the ability to beat me. It just doesn't seem balanced to me. My car with a manual tranny just isn't consistant enough. It was fun chasing down the slower cars though. No the burnout wasn't longer, but I just seemed to launch it better and pulled a 1.85 60' . I also noticed that the 2nd to 3rd shift was exceptionally fast. I might consider doing it again, but I do like test and tune sessions.

 I have a problem racing slower cars. I tend to get real anxious at the line. I can't wait and usually red light. It is fun running them down it seems like they are hauling an anchor or something. Good job. You will be back at it. 11s :banghead: they will come.

Congratu;lations!!!
I knew that timing light would be one of you're best investments yet!! WoW!!
Keep working on that 60' time. You have anyone you can swipe some 10x26" tires from to try? Maybe get a little more first gear action?
I think you can run mid 1.60's-to low 1.70's easily. THAT will be deep 11's for sure!!
But I think everyone should pay attention to what Shane is learning here. There is LOTS of potential in what you already have, whatever it is. Before you run out and spend money, work with what you have. He has whittled this thing .5 to .7 of a second without spending a cent other than the tires he was going to buy anyway. This is EXACTLY how Super Stockers run 9's and 10's with Q-jets and stock heads. They work to optimize the combination.
Good job Shane,
JIM
