In preparing to reassemble my control valve with new seals, etc. I have a lube question: how much grease is needed in the adapter side-the side with the grease zerk?? I've already experimented since it is apart and have put 10 pumps in it through the zerk. This seems like a lot but it appears this is just enough to coat all the parts nicely. The sleeve/seats/stud assembly move back and forth with seemingly full travel. The cavity is not packed with a lot of extra grease at all. I haven't installed the new boot and strap yet so just wanted some input on whether to put more grease in before total assembly. Also, all my manuals say to grease the "end of the valve and install the dust cap." Do they mean chasis lube on the adjuster nut end??? How much? Thanks for any assistance - I only want to do this once!
Re: Power Steering control valve rebuild/greasing (Marv)
I don't have any information on how much grease if needed to fill the ball stud cavity but I do have a caution. I know that the original ball stud seals had a small nozzel with a slit to allow excess grease to purge out of the cavity. So you really couldn't overfill it.
I think that the later rebuilding kits had a seal without the purge slit. So overfilling the cavity through the zerk fitting could actually rupture (and ruin) the boot seal. Check which type seal you are installing.
You should add some grease to the end with the dust cap. I wouldn't add too much.
Re: Power Steering control valve rebuild/greasing (Jim Shea)
Yesterday, I just put a "new stock" 82 control valve on. It had an allen set screw in the place where a zerk fitting would be. The box said to not add any grease and to do so would void the warranty.
Prior to that, however, I have a rebuild valve on that had a zerk fitting, which I gently put a pump or two of Mobil One in. Problem was, the jerks at the car lube places would put grease in everytime and finally caused it to begin to leak.
I think in the 82 Corvette shop manual it said to add grease until it barely came out the slit Jim Shea referred to.
Re: Power Steering control valve rebuild/greasing (Larry82)
Thanks Jim and Larry82 for your replies. What I've done is to make sure the sleeve gets full travel and is not restricted by any grease at the bottom-this pushed out a very slight amount. Then at reassembly of the adapter side I added a couple of small pumps in the cavity on top of the "inside" ball seat before installing the spring and sleeve nut. After attaching the valve body I worked the ball stud back and forth and made sure those parts were adequately lubed. Then, while watching around the stud, I pumped more grease into the zerk-it took only 1 full pump and the grease came out around the ball stud opening. That seemed good to me so I installed the new boot/strap. Maybe next spring I'll give it 1 pump of grease-a small one. The new boot is molded like the original but the slit is not cut in it for excess grease to escape. Probably OK if you do your own lub jobs but I may slice it like the original just to be safe. Thanks again for the help.
