How's it going???? I'm not new to the forum, but I am new to the C3 section. I've always wanted one and now I got it. I picked up a 79 from Colorado and had it shipped over to NJ. I really like the car even though she really needs some TLC. It came with hooker sidepipes which I plan to remove as they have a hole in one of the pipes, can't see the hole but I rather not try to fix it. It also needs the following:
BAD THINGS:
1) doorlocks- they were pulled out when somebody tried to steal it.
2) tranny- I was told it leaks, but haven't found any dripping fluid.
3) paint- NEEDS PAINT BAD
4) brakes- pads look ok, but the brakes are mushy.
5) wiper motor- doesn't work
6) interior- nothing a really good cleaning, seat covers and steering wheel cover couldn't fix.
7) had to order new exhaust- new headers, dual pipes, mid-america turbo mufflers.
GOOD THINGS:
1) Possible low milage(30,000)- who really knows for sure.
2) numbers matching
3) tires- brand new
Overall, I love the car and it will be a fun project.
I went through a bunch of stuff, myself, when I jumped into the C-3 fray.
Unless the mileage is verified, don't believe it. Mine shows, 23000. Of course it's been rolled. At least once.
Your mushy brakes are because of air in the system. In these cars, the rear brakes pump air in the system when the rotor runout is off. Or when the wheel bearings are bad. Buy some o-ring calipers, and you'll thank yourself. Zip carries them.
Windshield wiper motor is straightforward.
They say there are two kinds of Vettes, those that have just been painted, and those needing paint. Mine was the latter. You can go broke painting a Vette, so it's best to decide what the car's ultimate purpose is, and your tolerance/ability for spending money. Check out my site for at least one alternative.
You can have your wheel recovered. If it's not torn, you may want to try a respray first. I went this route with mine and it turned out really nice. My power steering isn't yet fixed (it will be this week) so the extra force on the rim has caused a little wear, but nothing a touch up spray won't fix. It's worth a shot, since it's easy, and if it meets your satisfaction, you'll have saved yourself a lot of dough.
The seat covers are not cheap. Still, IMHO, go true leather. It's the only way. And a great smell. While you're at it, replace the carpeting. It's not expensive and a nice thing to do while the seats are out.
Hang on to those headers. Rusted or not, someone just might buy them from you.
When you get a chance, post pics. I'd love to see the car. And when you need help, post here. You won't find a better source of info/help, anywhere.

Re: Newbie, kinda sorta (tabbruzz)
Congrats on the 79. I had a 79 as my first corvette and loved it. Still wish I had it too. Black, they say is beautiful. Hopefully I will be putting black paint on mine this fall.
Make sure you post plenty of pics and don`t be shy, ask all the questions you can think of. Someone here will be of help.
Thanks guys.......I will take digital pics this Saturday, but she isn't to pretty right now. I need to work on the mechanical stuff before I get to the paint, but I hope to get her painted within a month or two.....
