Went out to start the Vette last night. It turned over twice and then made a horrible slamming/grinding sound. After I sat stunned for a moment, I tried it again with the same result.
I don't know what to do. Could it be the starter, the flywheel, what else?
I know that sound all to well, it's the sound of money running out your pocket.
Can you tell where the sound is coming from? Might try unhooking the coil and have someone give it a quick crank while you listen to where the sound is possibly coming from then proceed from there.
Had a similar experience last month and it was the starter mount bolts loose. Made a heck of a noise but did'nt hurt anything and only took a minute to fix. Lotsa luck

A friend of mine brought his booster pack over, and the car started fine. When we got it to his garage, we tried it again and the noise was back. Put the booster pack on, no noise.
He thinks that it is a problem with the starter when the juice is low. He'll check it out today when we're putting the dual exhaust in.
Sounds to me like your starter solenoid is headed south. The solenoid is allowing the starter gear to start turning before it has engaged the flywheel.
